I’m looking for inspiration for non fiction/ dipping in to books. I read fiction on a kindle but would like some new non fiction for Christmas.

I’ve enjoyed Mary Beard,
Antonia Fraser,
Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through Spain and its Silent Past By Giles Tremlett
Sarah Helm A Life In Secrets: Vera Atkins and the Lost Agents of SOE

On another thread I’ve just recommended Barbara Tuchmann’s A Distant Mirror - it’s a wonderful book about the 14th century.

This is an interesting question, because the inquiry of favorite books usually leads people to think of novels.

So I'm hard-pressed to come up with titles, but ones that occur to me offhand are:

• Powers of Mind, by Adam Smith

• Schindler's List, by Thomas Keneally

• Miss Manners’ Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior, by Judith Martin

I loved Wild by Cheryl Strayed and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. I also liked Touching the Void by Joe Simpson. As you can see, a certain theme emerging there!

One which I read a long time ago which has stayed with me was Wild Swans.

Bill Bryson's travel books. Especially Notes From A Small Island.

Elisabeth Luard. Family Life. Birth, Death and the Whole Damn Thing.
I love this book and can dip in and out, though the later chapters still make me cry.

It is a bit sobering reading her later books such as My Life as a Wife when you realise how much she left out of the first book. I still love it though

I enjoy reading nonfiction. I’m currently reading a book now called the lawless ocean, it’s looking into crime at sea, not as piracy either. There is a chapter on a ship that does abortions in country where it’s illegal… They go out into international waters to do it. It also covers other topics though too.

Bill Bryson‘s books, the new one is good, the body.

I enjoy travel books as well, I forget the name of the book that I am waiting to read, but I think it’s the diary of a Beijing taxi driver. I read the book by the blogger nomadic Matt a couple of months ago. That was good.

There is a book in French as well about a parent who travels with her autistic son. I have special needs, so I really like that one.

Babel no more, if you enter languages. I meant if you enjoy languages. Sorry, I hope that’s the right name of it.
