Willdoitlater I love to read The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper at Christmas time.

My daughter (9) loves anything by Abi Elphinstone and Amy Wilson

tobee · 18/12/2019 15:26

WeirdPookah · 19/12/2019 17:32

Re-re... Not sure how many re-reading The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. Feeling festive!

WeirdPookah · 19/12/2019 17:33

I have forgotten about The Dark Is Rising. I might have to pop a postit note in my reading diary pages away to remind me for next year.

The institute by Stephen king. It's good. Pretty standard fare from SK.
It's full of the usual suspects that he writes so well.
It's not christmassy in the least but I'm really enjoying it and the creeping feeling of unease as I read.

lazylinguist · 20/12/2019 10:48

La Casa de Los Espíritus (The House of the Spirits) by Isabel Allende (very slowly in Spanish because I'm doing Spanish A Level!). I'm really enjoying it. Very magical realism.

Spoonsmum · 20/12/2019 11:01

@WeirdPookah I always read the Hogfather at Christmas too! Although I confess I am a slight fraud as I’ve not read too many Pratchett books, there’s just something about that book that I love.
I like to alternate/ share between fiction and non fiction and think I have actually started to prefer no fiction which I NEVER thought I’d say. Although I’m pretty sure this is because I’ve not found a good fiction book that’s sucked me in for a while.
So I’m also reading The Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater which is just glorious so far

WeirdPookah · 20/12/2019 15:28

@spoonsmum I was telling my 5 year old this morning about it and what Susan says to stop children doing silly twee voices as my girl was...it worked lol

I have read most of them, in order, only got a few left. So been rationing them out.

RaiderOfTheKitchenCupboard · 20/12/2019 17:32

Finished reading You Let Me In by Lucy Clarke the other day, favourite book I’ve read this year. And just started Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 20/12/2019 19:02

I have just finished The Sealwoman's Gift by Sally Magnusson (read in one sitting) - wow! it is a fantasic but heart wrenching read.

cwg1 · 20/12/2019 19:21

For those looking for lesser-known children's books for Christmas, I'd suggest Antonia Forest's End of Term and Jenny Overton's 13 Days of Christmas.

Very glad to see that 13 Days is available as an ebook, though, alas, End of Term is out of print.

roy844 · 13/04/2020 00:43

middleager · 13/04/2020 00:47

'The Time Machine' by HG Wells it's available as an audiobook on Spotify.

I have an Audible credit and I'm waiting for the new Steven King book this month, though I'm torn between reading that or The Institute.

middleager · 13/04/2020 00:48

Sorry, I fell for the Zombie thread.

PorpentinaScamander · 13/04/2020 00:54

Meet Me in Cockeberry Bay.

It's the 2nd of a 3 parter and is an easy read(ie total trash). But it's free on kindle unlimited and sometimes I love an easy read

Catrescue1971 · 13/04/2020 08:56

The Fatal Shore. It's about the colonization of Australia and I ended up giving up on the first chunk. I was interested in the journey and the arrival, not law in the 1700s. However, now that I've got to the arrival I am loving it. I have the paperback and it's huge. I can hardly hold it.

Xylophonics · 13/04/2020 11:04

Everything I Never told You by Celeste Ng, it is sad but very good - a family saga

Catrescue1971 · 13/04/2020 17:16

Have just started to read Ferney by James Long as a result of recommendation on here. It is a time slip novel - very good! Good character development / history. Very distracting which is great at the moment with Covid 19 about!!

U2HasTheEdge · 13/04/2020 17:43

Hamnet by Maggie O' Farrell

It's about the death of Shakespeare's son Hamnet/Hamlet and his wife, and their grief. Shakespeare is never named in the book.

I am loving it so far.

Whiskas1Kittens · 13/04/2020 18:12

I do find that I'm turning to books nowadays so much more now. Less stressful than the news or social media!!

CromfordGreyhound · 14/04/2020 09:56

I've just finished The 24 Hour Cafe by Libby Page. I really enjoyed it so borrowed The Lido- her first book- from the library. That was fine in itself but I much preferred her second novel :)

Abraid2 · 14/04/2020 09:58

The Truth in Our Lies, Eliza Graham. 99p this month as an ebook on Amazon.

TheoriginalLEM · 14/04/2020 10:00

Marks place x

seekingwaxwings · 16/04/2020 11:15

I've just finished The Heart's Invisible Furies. It was so wonderful and immersive that I can't stop thinking about it or imagine getting into another book! I've got A Gentleman in Moscow lined up for when I'm ready and I hope it doesn't disappoint.

rosegoldwatcher · 16/04/2020 13:30

@Catrescue1971 - so pleased that you are reading Ferney; it is a fabulous tale. There is a sequel - The Lives She Left Behind.
