Amazon
Bookshops
Free Libraries
Charity Shops....

Where do you get yours from?

(secretly hoping for a miracle tip for bargain books)

Library, I’ve had to break an Amazon habit as it was costing me a fortune. I much, much prefer reading on a Kindle but I can’t afford £40 odd a month on books.

Library charges a pound a reservation. I don’t like having to buy books unless I am exceptionally fond of them, as they get charity shopped and it seems a waste. Cookbooks are the exception.

Summerdiamond · 23/10/2019 20:32

I used to use charity shops, local bookshop or online for something I really wanted & would keep & I still do that, but for day to day reading kindle unlimited.
It’s saving me a fortune. I like to read a good bit
Its 8 a month so if I only read 2 or 3 books a month I’m getting my money’s worth.

Deemail · 23/10/2019 20:35

Z library free
Kindle daily deals
Amazon kindle when it's not available on other two and I'm desperate to read, this happens very very seldom as Z library is unreal.

MoltoAgitato · 23/10/2019 20:38

Kindle unlimited doesn’t have much I want to read, it seems. I want Google Play Music or Spotify Premium for books!

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 23/10/2019 20:38

DH gets books v. cheap at the local car boot sale. Downside is you have to get up early on a Sunday morning, which is why I don't do this too.

Cocolapew · 23/10/2019 20:46

Kindle
I've just discovered the library online and I'm on my 4th book this week Grin, it's great for trying new authors.

MoltoAgitato · 23/10/2019 20:51

Do your libraries let you read on the Kindle e-ink readers? Our library app only works on iPad/android tablets and phones, and I don’t want to use my phone or tablet in bed.

Whathappenedtothelego · 23/10/2019 21:25

I get most from charity shops, have also picked up a few from swap shelf at work.
I also buy used from eBay if I'm after something specific.
For new books, I always use local independent bookshop, if they don't have something in stock they will order it for the next day, so just as fast as Amazon (bit more expensive, but I view the extra as supporting my local high street).

tobee · 23/10/2019 21:41

Waterstones, Amazon new, second hand, marketplace and kindle, iBooks, second hand bookshops, presents from lovely people, Willoughby Book Club, The Book Matchmaker and eBay! Smile

RolytheRhino · 23/10/2019 21:42

The book people. Incredibly good value.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/10/2019 11:24

Amazon kindle and I almost always pay 99 p for books I want to read and not just rubbish self published ones because I use ereaderiq to track the books I want to read. They email me when the price drops to 99 p and I buy the book.

I have so many unread books that I only allow myself to buy them at this price.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 24/10/2019 11:27

kindle deals - I check these religiously. Often new and well reviewed books are on the 99p deal.
charity shops
library - ours is regularly restocked
birthdays - everyone knows I read a lot and so I get plenty go books or book tokens as presents.

Only very rarely will I spend hard cash in a bookshop.

MissLadyM · 24/10/2019 11:38

Library, charity shop, occasionally Amazon or eBay if I can't get it at the library. A gorgeous huge bookshop has opened near me and I treated myself to a couple of new ones. I think I'll probably do that now and again as it was a lovely experience.

BigFatLiar · 24/10/2019 12:40

Kindle unlimited is ok(ish). I don't mind it as I've read a lot of new authors (the mainstream ones tend not to be on unlimited). I tend to read crime & Sci-fi, some of the new authors aren't bad, some are dreadful. They also have a habit of writing 'arc' stories so to get the full tale you need to read several books, not all of which are on unlimited.

I've also read a few 'womens' books 'chic-lit' not being my normal reading. Must say that for some of the newer writers in this genre had they been for men they'd be in brown bags on the top shelf.

CaptainNelson · 24/10/2019 22:35

Apart from library, charity shops (not Oxfam, they're completely overpriced), swaps with friends, my favourite is Abe Books. It's a marketplace for 2nd hand books, you can find almost anything there and really cheap (eg i recently bought 5 books and it came to about £12). Quality is good.
I also get audio books from the library - they don't have a huge collection but I resent buying audio books and prefer not to do Amazon/Audible, so this is a good and free option and I've listened to a few things I wouldn't have done otherwise.
About twice a year I go to one of our local bookshops and buy something new.

bibliomania · 25/10/2019 09:51

The library is all that stands between me and penury. When the zombie apocalypse comes, that's where you'll find me hiding out. A rucksack of tinned food, some bottled water, and lots and lots of books, that should see me through.

First thing in the morning I usually check the Kindle daily deals, but I try to limit myself to ones I genuinely want to read. I'll occasionally fork out for a more expensive book on Kindle if I really want to read it and the library doesn't have it.

I have a mooch around the charity shops, but it can be a bit disheartening to always see the same piles of last year's over-hyped titles. I know some people say Oxfam is overpriced, but there is an Amnesty International bookshop near me that has an interesting selection but prices that are really hard to justify.

I feel a bit bad that I hardly ever buy new books from a physical bookshop, but I have to keep an eye on the budget.

Lamentations · 25/10/2019 09:57

Various second hand sellers via Amazon mostly, sometimes charity shops, occasionally the library. I go through phases of using the library, ours is a fairly big 'town' one but they stock a lot of popular fiction and not a lot of what's on my Amazon wish list.

Lamentations · 25/10/2019 09:59

Molto cookbooks are the one thing I like to borrow from the library most because I don't like them clogging up my bookcase.

swampytiggaa · 25/10/2019 10:00

I work in a charity shop. My ‘to read’ pile is ever increasing 😂😂😂

Once I’ve read them I take them back and stick my gift aid number on them so we get paid all over again for them with a little bit on top!

Those if you who buy from World of Books - thank you 💕 they collect our excess books and pay us by weight for them so you are indirectly helping charity by choosing them

PenelopeFlintstone · 25/10/2019 10:03

I’ve had to give up the library as it’s cheaper for me to buy from the charity shop than to pay the library fines.

ChessieFL · 25/10/2019 12:35

I do buy a lot from our local independent bookshop and Waterstones as I don’t want them to close. I read a lot though so can’t afford to get everything new. I use the library a lot, otherwise kindle and charity shops.

Cherrypi · 26/10/2019 06:58

Library mostly. Have 19 out at the moment oops. I also use borrowbox the library audiobook and ebook service. Our reservations are £1.80 so I either track which library the book I want is in or buy it on kindle if it's cheaper. I use world of books for book club if it's the cheapest option.

TattiePants · 26/10/2019 15:41

I'm lucky in that I live an hour away from Barter Books so 3 or 4 times a year I go there and usually come back with 15-20 books. I'm definitely overdue a trip. After that it's charity shops and Amazon (usually used books from resellers) for books that I desperately want and can't find elsewhere.

Hellohah · 26/10/2019 18:32

I get most of mine from the library too.
@StitchesInTime... I can't believe your library charges to reserve books. Ours doesn't charge anything, and you can reserve any book from any library in the city and collect from the local one.

Wheninfrome · 26/10/2019 18:35

Amazon and charity shops - I do have a Kindle but much prefer a proper book so the Kindle sits unused in a cupboard (was a present)
