Can anyone recommend a good series of books?

I read pretty quickly and always feel I get to the end of a book quicker than I wanted to. So it helps a bit if I know there’s another book to follow.
Can anyone think of any good books in a series? The Jackson Brodie books by Kate Atkinson would be be obvious, I’ve read (and loved) those, and the Robert Galbraith books.
So could be an actual series, or just have the same characters in.

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series is super, there are about twenty books which cover an entire naval career, and several around the world tours.

Another vote for the Shardlake books.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy (starts with Fire from Heaven)

Philippa Gregory's Cousins War series, start with Lady of the Rivers, even though this wasn't the first published, it is the first chronologically.

Yes to Dark Materials, The Dark Tower and Aubrey/Maturin

I love them all and have re-read (or, more precisely, listened to) them multiple times.

Will have a look at some of the others the pp have mentioned, I also love a good series Grin

DCI Ryan series by LJ Ross. Detective novels set in Northumbria.

If you like thrillers, Ben Hope series by Scott Mariani

Thursday Next - start with the Eyre Affair, if you enjoy that there are another 5 in the series. Weird and very, very wonderful!

No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series by Alexander McCall Smith.

If you like detective stories, try Roman detectives with the Lindsey Davis Falco series (starts with Silver Pigs) or the Marcus Corvinus books of David Wishart, these are quite quirky, not gory at all, start with Ovid.

Though I read The Lydian Baker first as it was on cheap offer, and only gradually got into the chronological order.

JD Robb's In Death series - up to around 50, crime in slightly future NY.

FawnDrench · 02/10/2019 14:24

Lee Child's Jack Reacher series.

cakegoblin · 02/10/2019 14:27

The Neapolitan Quartet by Elena Ferrante, starting with My Brilliant Friend

Absolutely loved the Manda Scott Boudica series.

Louise Penny is a brilliant Canadian crime writer. Her series starts with Still Life.

Nicki French’s series featuring of the week in the title are very entertaining, starting with ‘Blue Monday. the heroine is Frieda Klein a sensitive psychologist who solves crimes. Each is a one off but there is a running investigation throughout.

Teacher22 · 07/10/2019 21:00

Sorry, missing comma after Klein.

The Harry Dresden books, can't remember the author. If you're into detective stuff and also a bit of supernatural/magic stuff. I loved them.

I'd second the Shardlake recommendations, and also suggest the Rebus stories from Ian Rankin, and the 'Shetland' series by Ann Cleves - all crime/thriller though

I'm also a huge sucker (sorry) for Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Much more than horror.

The Clifton chronicles by Jeffrey Archer are good. There are 7 of them and I really got into them. Also the Alexander Mcall Smith 44 Scotland Street books are brilliant. Really short chapters and really funny. I am on number 5 now.
