What's the book that's provoked the most sadness in you?

I have to do a work-based project on Empathy. Too long to explain here.

TP is my No 1 author and his last book (Shepherds crown) when Granny dies, is the one that provokes the most tears in me.

What's yours?

This thread is making me cry Blush But I am 40+6 weeks pregnant and I miss Terry!!

Night Watch. The bit where Vimes finds the torture victims...

I think Death would be an interesting character study if you're doing a project on empathy though.

Another has just sprung to mind.

When Gavin falls to his death and Gaspode survives then tracks Gavin's body down to howl his tribute. The howl is picked up by all the wolves in the valley to relay the message. Upsets me each time.

Shepherd's Crown, in part because of Granny but mainly because it is a farewell to all of Discworld.

Also if I can go outside Discworld, Nation, its a story about identity and memory and I have always felt it was a response to his diagnosis.

I cried when Gavin died and gaspode howled too. Shepherds crown was heartbreaking knowing it was the last. The fact Terry asked for his hard drive with all his ideas and half finished books to be steam rolled gets to me too

CMOTDibbler · 23/09/2019 13:49

Nation always makes me howl tbh , so much that I don't read it as much. The start with her wanting to put the baby in with her mother so the baby isn't on their own starts me off, and it goes from there

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 23/09/2019 14:21

Oh, i had genuinely blanked out that bit with the coffins in Nation.
And now i’m 38 weeks pregnant and genuinely crying to myself on the sofa thinking about it. Gah.

WelshMoth · 23/09/2019 21:00

@FelicityBeedle I didn't know that!

I had hopes that his daughter would somehow pick up where he left off - as if that would ever be the same, but one had to hope Sad

Keen discworld follower here. I know Shepherds crown would be the last Tiffany book but was still surprised that he killed off Granny Weatherwax after threatening to polish her off a good few years before writing the book.
The book which upset me the most was Nation At the end I wanted the book to end happily and It didn,t I was so upset.
