What did you think of it?

oooh, a long time ago. i thought it was a bit of a chore as i recall but i can't actually remember much about it.

PestoMonster · 31/07/2007 16:25

I have, I had to do it for French A level. It was tough work translating it and therefore not that enjoyable, particularly as we had to analyse it to death too!

Jazzicatz · 31/07/2007 16:25

Yes, the misery just gets too much!

did it for French A level

god it was a misery

that's what I remember mainly, also something about her having a big head

(or maybe that was my bad french)

suey2 · 31/07/2007 16:29

brilliant adaptation at the national theatre this year, though.

Jazzicatz · 31/07/2007 16:29

No that was her husband that her and her lover killed!!

OP posts:
Jazzicatz · 31/07/2007 16:30

I taught Thérèse Raquin at A-level French... nearly twenty years ago. And I have completely forgotten it

CountessDracula · 31/07/2007 16:43

i saw it at the national recently
a friend of mine was Therese
it was very miserable (but good!)

Lilymaid · 31/07/2007 16:46

Recent book discussed at my book group. We all thought it was excellent and would make a brilliant film. Not too long, either, which is always a help.

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 31/07/2007 16:47

I enjoyed it but it is miserable as pointed out on here.

Quattrocento · 31/07/2007 16:47

Yes. Bizarre I thought and very miserable. Have only read that and Germinal, and I might say the same about that.

Jazzicatz · 31/07/2007 16:49

I did like Zola's writing style though!

duchesse · 31/07/2007 17:06

Yep- -went through a Zola phase between 13-14 (read his entire Bete Humaine series) then "did" Therese Raquin a couple of years later. Loved it. We also "did" that one about an unfufilled and dominated wife by Francois Mauriac, which informed a lot of the way I think now, and made me very determined even at 17 not to marry a Frenchman.

But Therese Raquin- loved it and found it appalling in equal measures.

Wheelybug · 31/07/2007 17:08

Didn't really enjoy it and tbh can't remember too much about it but it was a while ago...

OrmIrian · 31/07/2007 17:12

At A-level. I've just about recovered. Not a happy book.

suey2 · 31/07/2007 19:19

I think it has finished now jazzicatz, but it may be worth checking the website

bagsundereyes · 31/07/2007 19:22

I'm another one who was forced to read it for French A-level, which never does a lot for the enjoyment of a book. I seem to remember that all the characters were complete gits though, so I didn't mind their miserable fates.

Quite nice, evocative descriptions of 19thc Paris though.
