Her books keep coming up as recommendations. Anyone read any? Worth a read?

Where should I start?

Thanks!

I like Sarah Waters, but it's been a few years since I've read any of her books. I think the first one I read was Tipping the Velvet, which is a good romp!

The Night Watch is also very good, but very sad/a bit graphic in parts as it is set during WW2 and one of the characters is an ambulance driver.

I loved Little Stranger but tbh I enjoyed them all. Amazing writer.

jenthelibrarian · 29/06/2019 14:19

She's brilliant!

I like The Night Watch, Fingersmith and Tipping The Velvet best.

tobee · 29/06/2019 15:14

I thought The Paying Guests was brilliant.

Stygimoloch · 29/06/2019 16:21

Fab, thanks. I’ve started with Tipping the Velvet. I remember the controversy about the tv series when I was younger.

Looking forward to the romp 😊.

Me too - the best Sarah Waters IMHO!

Bezalelle · 29/06/2019 23:06

She's so, so good.

PopGoesTheWeaz · 10/07/2019 23:13

The Paying Guests , third here. I listened to it and recommend the audio book as well

Dexra · 11/07/2019 11:33

I tried to read Tipping the Velvet, and really wasn't impressed. I think this must be an issue with me though, as everyone else seems to love her.

Spidey66 · 12/07/2019 14:46

I've read Fingersmith and Little Stranger. I thought they were OK, but not as amazing as everyone else seemed to think.

CharliesMouse · 19/07/2019 19:38

I started with The Little Stranger, which I loved, then went on to read all the others in no particular order. I think they're all brilliant reads. The Night Watch has some very harrowing passages about the London during the blitz but don't let that put you off, it's a fabulous book.

RomaineCalm · 19/07/2019 20:53

I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Paying Guests'. For some reason I didn't read any of her other books - off to have a look now!

Cityzen74 · 19/07/2019 22:02

Fingersmith is in my top 10 books ever. I would definitely recommend that one. I enjoyed them all but none were as exciting as that one for me!

Valski · 19/07/2019 23:01

Can anyone recommend any other authors or specific books by authors who are writing similar stuff to Sarah Waters? I have read all of her books and seeking suggestions for similar if anyone has any tips. Many thanks

TapasForTwo · 19/07/2019 23:07

I have only read Fingersmith but really enjoyed it. Tipping the Velvet was on TV a few years ago.

Needtobuythecatawashcloth · 22/07/2019 22:11

Fingersmith is in my top ten too. I don't think she's ever written a bad book. However, some of them are unbelievably depressing. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which without getting into spoiler territory! Grin

elkiedee · 24/07/2019 14:56

Velski, nothing exactly the same but you could try Emma Donoghue's historical novels - Life Mask, Frog Music, The Sealed Letter, Slammerkin, The Wonder

donotcovertheradiator · 24/07/2019 14:58

I wish she would hurry up and produce another! There are lots of imitators-many try hard but they never quite hit her standard.

tobee · 24/07/2019 16:33

I also recommend Frog Music!

I've actually only read The Paying Guests. Are the others very different in style? With a supernatural element?

LivingInLaputa · 24/07/2019 16:39

Are all her books historical fiction? And from different periods?

Not read any by her yet but plan to. I did enjoy the sealed letter mentioned up thread too!
