If I loved Circe, what else should I read

Just finished Circe by Madeline Miller, absolutely loved it, and wondering what to read next.

I also loved All the light we cannot see, The Heart's Invisible Furies and A Little Life (although that was hard going and I need something a bit lighter for my holiday reading).
Any suggestions? Thanks

Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls — female-centric take on the Trojan war. Or Madeleine Miller’s other novel, The Song of Achilles?

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. Very sharp and funny - in a totally different style from Circe but a good counterpoint.

Or for something readable but totally different, The Heart's Invisible Furies recommended above is a great shout.

Have just realised you have already read it. (Doh! Teach me to read too fast while drinking wine.)

A second vote for Silence of the Girls. Just as gripping and well-written as Circe.

Little Fires Everywhere was very good
The song of Achilles was beautiful

Knowledge of Angels by Jill Paton Walsh is a great read.

I loved Circe. Here's a pile of other books I've loved...

If I loved Circe, what else should I read

I loved Circe and have got silence of the girls and the song of Achilles lined up. I read the penelopiad and liked it but wasn’t as taken by the children of Jocasta, though it was still enjoyable.

Will add the other recommendations from the thread to my reading list!

I loved Circe! Also loved The Song of Achilles and currently reading The Silence of the Girls! I recently read Stephen Fry’s Mythos, which was good if you want to stick with the Greek theme. Another book I really liked recently was Gillespie and I by Jane Harris. There’s also The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

Porpoise by mark haddon. Intertwined Greek myth and present day

BookBookBook · 20/07/2019 15:38

Colm Toibin's The House of Names -- his take on the Oresteia.

bookworm14 · 30/07/2019 22:02

Try The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks - a retelling of the biblical story of David along the same lines as Song of Achilles.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 30/07/2019 22:09

I’ve just enjoyed Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave (I like his other books too). I also read Silence of the Girls recently, which was good but not a very enjoyable read to be honest - pretty grim!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 30/07/2019 22:10

Really enjoyed Ordinary People recently - I pp’s very helpful picture

We've got very similar reading tastes OP!

Try The Binding by Bridget Collins. I loved it.

RoyalCorgi · 02/08/2019 13:26

Do Read A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes. It also tells the story of the Iliad and the Odyssey from the point of view of the women, and it's excellent. If you've read and enjoyed Circe, Song of Achilles and The Silence of the Girls (and I enjoyed all three!) you'll love this.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 02/08/2019 16:36

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and The Liars' Gospel by Naomi Alderman. Both retellings of Biblical stories, partly or wholly from a female perspective.

There's also Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips, a comic novel with the Greek gods living in the present day.

Ooh, great thread! I just read the Silence of the Girls and really loved it, will try some of these others on here. Thanks!
