If so, have you then actually enjoyed flying?!

Anyone? I really, really need to tackle my phobia of flying and wondered if anyone had a success story after reading this?

sorry granarybeck I have not read it. I have heard his stop smoking book is quite brilliant, his dieting book(I have read it) is quite bonkers, and his controlling alchohol one has such good reviews on amazon I am going to buy it. Have you checked out the reviews on www.amazon.co.uk?

What does Allen Carr suggest you do - smoke a relaxing cigarette to quell your nerves?

gb - I am terrified of flying to the extent that I simply won't do it. About 13 years ago I was determined to overcome my fear so a pilot friend and I went to Dublin for the weekend (40 mins from Brum!!)- i figured he could talk me through the noises etc. boarded the plane and was shocked at how small it was inside (737) - anyway people were still getting on and I panicked and decided I wanted off, friend wouldn't let me get off and the airhostess came over to us . anyway she checked with the captain and "upgraded" us to the front as she thought I might be claustrophobic and gave me a very nice little drink which she ordered me to down in one. so by the end of the flight I was half cut and captain invited me to the cockpit for the descent which was good. They gave me a bottle of champagne before we disembarked and everyone at the end gave me a round of applause. The return flight was a different matter but I still don't like it.

Dh hates flying too, so I might get this book for him. He gets valium from the doc with no problems. If you don't like them, then they also prescribe beta blockers, but dh said they didn't work well enough for him.

i have actually read the book and feel strangely okay about trying get on a flight. it is very good, rather than give you ways to deal with the fear he tries to remove it. i'm just worried about making my fear even worse by having anther bad experience, i really do panic, last time just drank lots of vodka till we got there, (not a pretty sight). i think i may try the valium as well though.

If dh is on his own he has a few drinks too, but we have a trip coming in november, and we are going with all four children, so I don't want to be looking after 5 all alone. I will tell him about the book and see what he says. It's take off that is the worst for him.

if he does actually fly now, i recommend it as worth a try. i cannot bring myself to try and felt it still worked a bit. as you say, i want to take the kids on holiday and can't really be rat-a*sed and look after them.
