Going on holiday next week and decided to read something different. Never read any Stephen king. Where should I start?

OP posts:
chipsandpeas · 16/06/2019 18:46

christine
carrie
if you fancy a long read then the stand

FrangipaniBlue · 16/06/2019 18:49

Misery
IT
Duma Key
Dark Tower series
Cell (film is shit, book is fab!)
Green Mile
Shawshank Redemption

VodselForDinner · 16/06/2019 18:50

Carrie, Misery, The Shining.

I’d also highly recommend Four Seasons which is a collection of four novellas, including the source material for Shawshank Redemption.

gamerchick · 16/06/2019 18:53

The bachman books. I don't think it includes rage anymore (understandably) but it's still a decent read.
The green mile is a brilliant book.
The stand is a bit of hit or miss whether you get the full or edited edition. I've only ever found one full edition for some reason.
The girl who loved Tom Gordon

Desdelona · 16/06/2019 19:07

My favourites are
The green mile- my all time favourite
Misery
The shining- Quite different from the film
Mr Mercedes- Good if you like crime novels
Different seasons- includes the stories that inspired films Shawshank redemption and Stand by me
The Stand- Good but very long, maybe not a great one to start with if you have never read King before.

PregnantOnPurpose · 16/06/2019 19:09

Christine
Pet cemetery
IT
The shining

Misery is my #1

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/06/2019 19:11

The Stand. It's very long though!

Minkies11 · 16/06/2019 19:11

Tommyknockers! Some funny moments and a cracking good read.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 16/06/2019 19:11

I started with misery, it's still one of my favourites, Carrie is also good, and pet semetary.

mummyhaschangedhername · 16/06/2019 19:13

Following. I have 10 Stephen king books on my wish list. This helps

Littlegoth · 16/06/2019 19:18

Pet Sematary was the first Stephen King book I read, I revisit it now and again and enjoy it as much as I did the first time.

Mr Mercedes, Christine, Cujo all did me well as holiday reads.

Salem’s lot, Different Seasons, The Bachman Books all stand outs for me.

If I was going to recommend one to skip it would be Sleeping Beauties.

Littlebelina · 16/06/2019 19:25

My favourite are the Stand and IT but for a first read maybe Carrie. Simply because the Stand is very long and there is one bit towards the end of IT (rightly left out of the adaptations) where he goes a bit off piste and might be a bit off putting to a first time reader. I love Mr mercedes although it's less horror\supernatural than some of the others. I not really disliked any one of his (quite liked sleeping beauties but agree it's not his best)

HenSolo · 16/06/2019 19:26

Carrie, IT, The Shining and Pet Semetary are his best, but most of the short story collections (the older the better I think) are fantastic

Desdelona · 16/06/2019 20:49

Also 11/22/63 was really good, maybe a little overlong but I really enjoyed it. I am really fascinated by the whole time travel, should you change the past if you could stories.

lolaflores · 16/06/2019 20:54

Dead zone. Pet semetary. Salems Lot...which still gives me the horror

Processedpea · 16/06/2019 20:56

Short story collection

PuppyMonkey · 16/06/2019 20:58

The Stand
The Stand
The Stand

WhiteLightTrainWreck · 16/06/2019 21:00

Any of them are great to read. Personal favourites and The Green Mile and Carrie.

The Shining is good too but for some reason even though I know the story inside out, it still gives me nightmares when I read it (and I don't normally dream)

CathyorClaire · 16/06/2019 21:20

The early ones to start with. Carrie, Christine, Pet Semetary etc. His writing went a bit downhill (understandably) after his car accident imo Lisey's Story being a particular low but has improved immensely with his recent works.

FrancesFryer · 16/06/2019 21:25

I love the stand. I also like 22/11/63.

I cannot read the green mile without crying.

I haven't seen any Stephen king films. Well except the Shawshank redemption but I haven't read the story it's based on either.

Willow2017 · 16/06/2019 21:51

The Stand
The Girl who loved Tom Gordon
11/22/63
The Black Tower all 5 of them😀stunning epic story.
Don't read The Green Mile on holiday you will spend your time crying. Same with Cujo.
Short stories and novels are good 'The Body' is another great insightful story about teen life. (The film is Stand By Me)

My first was Carrie.

All his books are different. All have a different twist on regular people's lives. Thats what i like about his books.

Desdelona · 16/06/2019 21:51

@FrancesFryer The films of Green mile and Misery are really good.

Willow2017 · 16/06/2019 21:51

Novellast not novels. Stupid auto correct.

Willow2017 · 16/06/2019 21:52

I give up😠

FrancesFryer · 16/06/2019 21:54

Does the green mile still make you cry as a film?

I bought the book when it was originally released as a series of 6. One each month
