I have juyst obtained a lovely new bookcase all for my very self! None of my babies books!

I want to start a big book collection as i am a complete book worm and i love reading.

Anyway i was thinking i wouls love to collect all the books i absolutley adored as a child not only to read to DS when he is older but also to maybe to re read myslef and get an adult prespective, things like The Famous Five, The Far away tree and many more enid blyton books ans well as some Jaquline Wilson ones ect?

And then obviousley my adult fiction as well. Now when i mention this to other people they give me the oddest looks as if i am insane to have teen/childrens books in my little libary.

What do you think?

Not at all. I make excuse that I'm holding on to so many of the books I had as a child so that my children can enjoy them too. But the truth is that I still love many of them and happily reread them. And ones that I no longer have, I buy. And if the LOs are old enouogh to enyoy a book that is particularly precious to me, but not old enough to be responsible to look after it then I either by a replacement copy for them, or read it to them, or simply hold off giving it to them until I feel ready to do so.

Ditto the spelling and typing!

I don't think it's odd. The only thing I would say is that I have kept some of my childhood books (and bought replacement copies of others) only to discover that my DDs don't share my enthusiasm . Many of them are just too old fashioned for them.

I have hung on to most of mine and when I have time trawl charity shops etc to collect missing ones from series - the women in Cancer Research think I am mad buying pony books etc when I am obv too old to read them myself but not old enough to be buying them for my kids.

I wouldn't spend a lot of money buying new editions though - charity shops, car boots, ebay etc are a better bet. Or borrow them from the library.

And don't be disappointed if DS hates them - I remember being very unimpressed with The Hobbit (which my father had adored), but I came round to Tolkein in my own time years later.

I have been collecting children's books for years - I have hundreds and what I find is that you never know what your child might suddenly decide to take an interest in - DD1 has read loads of stuff that is out of print now like the Drina Ballerina books and even Angela Brazil - on the other hand she completely ignored all the Famous Five I collected and now DD2 loves it. So by all means use your children as an excuse no matter how young they are as they will be so lucky to have the run of some really good children's fiction when they are old enough -and enjoy yourself in the meantime - in my view anyone who can't appreciate reading a good children's books just doesn't like reading very much anyway - so who cares about their opinion?
