Just that really. I don't like books that are too light or too depressing. I love beautiful writing and story telling. All The Light We Cannot See was the best book I've read in a long time, what should I choose next?

Bumping this for you. I loved this book too and would love to see some suggestions!

MiniDoofa · 08/06/2019 07:42

I loved All the light we cannot see too. Haven’t read anything quite as good since, but recommend The light between oceans (though sad parts).
Hoping to see some recommendations I could do with a new book!

Music and Silence.
The Crimson Petal and the White.
The Museum Of Extraordinary Things.
Burial Rites.
The Fair Fight.
Golden Hill.

Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch orThe Secret History.
Or the perpetual MN favourite, John Boyne’s The Heart’s Invisible Furies.

The Light Between the Oceans by M.L Stedman

A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale.

I've enjoyed All The Light We Cannot See and The Light Between Oceans.

I've recently read The Secret Wife by Gill Paul and that was a beautiful story.

teazle · 08/06/2019 17:36

Thank you for the recommendations. I'll add Burnt Shadows as that was another stand out book for me.

I loved Burial Rites and The Sealwoman’s Gift. The descriptions of Iceland were so vivid.

Nearlyadoctor · 15/06/2019 16:33

The Book Thief - one of my favourites alongside All the light we cannot see.

DeadDoorpost · 15/06/2019 16:37

"If nobody speaks of remarkable things" by Jon Mcgregor

BaconAndAvocado · 18/06/2019 22:15

Oh wow, I think I've found my literary soul sisters!

I too ADORED All the Light We Cannot See and a great many of the books mentioned above.

Will definitely have a look at some of the others. Thanks!

The Heart's Invisible Furies and the Goldfinch are on a par, both amazing reads.

ozymandiusking · 18/06/2019 22:22

I have just watched the film, The Light Between Oceans, and really enjoyed it, so I have down loaded the book.
I can wholehearted recommend the book The Secrets at Oceans Edge,
by Kali Napier. Excellent.

BaconAndAvocado · 19/06/2019 17:03

The film is exquisite.

Did you know the 2 leads married after meeting on the set of this film.......

M1Mountain · 20/06/2019 16:51

Hated Golden Hill and rind Goldfinch over rated and unnecessarily loooooong.

I loved Where the Crawdads Sing,The Snow Child and To the Bright Edge of the World.

WisestIsShe · 20/06/2019 22:22

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is beautiful.

BaconAndAvocado · 21/06/2019 23:02

Second that Wisest
Amor Towles' first book The Rules of Civility is also excellent.

MargotMoon · 23/06/2019 13:45

Second 'If nobody speaks of remarkable things'. Also loved 'Reservoir 13' by the same author

Katinthedoghouse · 04/07/2019 15:19

My 2nd favourite book in the world is all the light we cannot see.

My favourite book ever is the nightingale by Kristen Hannah. Fab.u.lous

MattMagnolia · 11/07/2019 18:54

Beautiful poetic writing: The Song of Achilles, Madeleine Miller, any Sebastian Barry, any Cormac McCarthy..

StillDumDeDumming · 17/07/2019 07:57

Ha I came on to say the writing reminded me of Sebastian Barry and Jon Macgregor. Story telling genius. Oh and Rose Tremain of course. She’s incredible and her books are diverse.

.

Cohle · 12/08/2019 19:31

The Secret History by Donna Tartt - Beautifully written and un-put-down-able like All The Light We Cannot See, which I think is a rare combination

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson - Set around WWII and like All The Light We Cannot See has an interesting narrative structure. I found it a little slow to start with, but it was worth sticking with.

IrishMamaMia · 12/08/2019 19:32

I loved it too, Id like to reread it. I recommend Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans and Suite Francaise by Irene Nemeriovsky. They are different but good World War Two stories.
On a more modern note, I read Normal People by Sally Rooney and Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng this year and found them particularly unputdownable.

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/08/2019 20:15

I loved that book. So beautifully written and so very sad. Those poor children and the lives they had.

I also loved the following and would put them in the same band (if I had to categorise books which I do in my head!)

The Storyteller's Secret
The Garden Of Evening Mists
The Private Papers Of Eastern Jewell
