I tend to read historical fiction, but open to other genres. Looking for some easy reading whilst in hospital. Nothing scary, gory, violent or psychologically [can't think of the word] demanding(?).

Dear Mrs Bird - AJ Pearce,
The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen - Hendrik Groen,
The Salt Path - Raynor Winn

Wishing you a swift recovery.

VittysCardigan · 29/05/2019 21:48

That should say The Secret Diary of H.G aged 83 3/4

elf1985 · 29/05/2019 21:53

I've been reading the twisted tales Disney range from Tesco. They are fantastic.

GeorgiaTrotmansParachute · 29/05/2019 22:02

The Chronicles of St Mary's by Jodi Taylor? A dysfunctional, daft but loveable bunch of historians dedicated to the study of history in contemporary time (not time travellers you understand).

Light, frothy and fun. I prefer them in audio book form because the same narrator has read the entire series and I can't hear the characters any other way now.

loubielou31 · 29/05/2019 22:02

The Strawberry Thief. It's the new book by Joanne Harris and the fourth novel about Vianne Rocher from the Chocolat book. I really liked it, a good ending, not too taxing a read.

BestIsWest · 29/05/2019 22:05

The Dr Ruth Galloway series by Ellie Griffiths. Murder with an archeological twist. Very easy to read.

BestIsWest · 29/05/2019 22:06

Not particularly gory or scary though.

endofthelinefinally · 29/05/2019 22:10

If you want a really good read try The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.
It got me back to reading again after 2 years of not being able to concentrate on anything.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 29/05/2019 22:15

Ooh, I've lots of light reading to recommend!
Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend
Sunday Lunch Club
The Hunting Party
Single Ladies of the Jacaranda Retirement Village
Circe.
The Colour of Bee Larkham's Murder
All very readable and very recouperative. *I made up that word very possibly

hidingmystatus · 30/05/2019 18:28

Alexander McCall Smith - the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. Delightful!

expatchouli · 30/05/2019 19:36

Thank you! I've read some of these, about 5 of the Ladies Detective Agency and then they seemed a lot of the same. I like made up words Usually. Sometimes I worry about how my DC sound as I'm pretty much the only person except TV who they hear speaking English!

Perhaps a Sally Rooney? At my level of reading, they are nice easy to read books about the inner lives of a particular type of successful young student - and most other readers seem to see a lot more than that in them too.

Mesmeri · 30/05/2019 20:56

Love, Nina by Nina Stubbs. Very easy to read and made me laugh out loud.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 30/05/2019 21:04

I also re-read some childhood favourites when I wasn't feeling well. Was lovely and familiar. And interesting to see how differently I viewed them as an adult.
Hope you recover swiftly, OP x

Bit late to the thread, but if you're still looking, have you read the Shardlake series? They're about a lawyer solving crimes in the Tudor period. More gripping than that sounds!

Cracking books, easy reading but substantial enough stories that they hold your attention. The first one is called Dissolution.

ritzbiscuits · 15/06/2019 18:02

Class Jenny Colgan. It's next in my TBR pile. It's billed as 'Mallory Towers' for grown ups.

Synecdoche · 15/06/2019 18:07

Have you read the Phillips Gregory books? Definition of easy reads but I love them. Plus there are loads! Get well soon.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/06/2019 21:13

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, about a very inept bounty hunter. Laugh out loud funny.

My go-to comfort read is always Georgette Heyer. Romantic, funny, gripping, and a guaranteed happy ending to make you sigh happily.

hidingmystatus · 15/06/2019 22:13

Coming back...
JD Robb's In Death series - very moreish police series set in slightly future New York.
SR Garrae's Death in Focus: modern police procedural with a dash of romance.
Love Stephanie Plum (PP suggestion).

Ellmau · 16/06/2019 19:40

Rhys Bowen - series starting with Her Royal Spyness - fluffy but fun.

Abcd3 · 16/06/2019 19:44

Evening Class, by Maeve Binchy. City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert. I agree with a PP that Love, Nina is great.

Abcd3 · 16/06/2019 19:45

My Italian Bulldozer by Alexander McCall Smith.

Abcd3 · 16/06/2019 19:48

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.

val4 · 16/06/2019 23:23

The seven sisters series by Lucinda Reilly.
