I LOVED 'The Cry' by Helen Fitzgerald - what else would I love?

Finished it over two days. Really love her style of writing. Not flowery, great voice, short chapters, fab characters. 'Un-put-downable'.

I haven't read anything else of Fitzgerald's - are her other books similarly written?

Anything else written in this style that I would like? Not too fussed about genre (which genre would you say The Cry is in?). Back to the library tomorrow to return this one and hoping to pick up another one I love.

Maybe 'The Slap' by Christos Tsiolkas? Australia again but a similarly complex story with undercurrents and good characterisation IMO. Some people hate it though.

Ruth Park is my favourite Australian author, she wrote for children and adults, and her autobiographical ones are good too.
She crosses genres too.

Helen Fitzgerald has a really distinctive authorial voice so I think you’d definitely enjoy her other books. I’ve read Viral, Bloody Women, The Donor and The Cry - they were all fairly acerbic, funny and dark. I’ve heard really good reviews of her latest book too.

I’m reading her new one, Worst Case Scenario, really good so far, the main character sounds like a mumsnetter! Loved The Exit and The Devils Staircase.

Similar style are Paula Daly books. And Wink Murder by Ali Knight is good. Also if you don’t mind horror I think Christopher Fowler and Anne Billson use a similar style.
