I can almost hear the groans as I type the topic title, but here goes:

Any recommendations for a good read, something a bit challenging to stir the old grey matter please.

Thanks

Hmm, maybe "affected" was a bad choice of word. Look, I just can't be high brow all of the time.

If you don't tell me, I'll just have to buy something terribly popular from Tesco's...

Stuff it, I didn't want recommendations anyway, I'll just blindly take whatever Waterstone's have on offer. Don't mind me...

walnutshell, i must have read every single baby book out there. they are pretty much the same. the omne that afected me most was the one by Voldemortina and it affected me so much i never bought anoither one again and cuddled my babys and fed them when they cried rather than by the clock.

Thre will be positives and negaties to every book which won't nessacarily match your +s and -s. Can you get some out of your local library fortst so you don't waste money?

Why Love Matters by Sue Gerheart.

The Politics of Breastfeeding by Gabrielle Palmer.

Punished by Rewards by Alfie Cohn.

scattyspice · 22/07/2007 20:40

What age are your kids?

Theclosetpagan · 22/07/2007 20:49

Why Love Matters is a fantastic book - I am halfway through it at the moment. A bit heavy going in places but well worth the read.

Walnutshell · 22/07/2007 20:59

mumof - I very much enjoy Penelope Leach, she is so soothing. I will look in the library though, good point.

Project - I would LOVE to read The Politics of Breastfeeding particularly as am feeding ds with no signs of stopping, but I cannot get hold of it . I will take on board your other recommendations too - hang on while I get a post-it...

DS is almost 21 months, I'm just very interested in current psychological thinking and want to keep reading and of course turn to MN for a bit of guidance! Thanks.

i didn't come across penelope leach tbh. have actually not come across any of the books already mentioned! maybe it just felt like i read every baby book .

scattyspice · 22/07/2007 21:01

They f**k you up by Oliver James is very current psychology.

I had trouble following some of it though

Walnutshell · 22/07/2007 21:03

Yeah, scatty, I am reading that one at the mo and in between novels! Interesting although sometimes it seems to be a little superficial, but I am enjoying it.

I read "The Highly Sensitive Child" by Elaine Aaron.

HOwever, it was more centred around my DD's characteristics, rather than general parenting.

moondog · 22/07/2007 21:04

Another vote for The Politics of Breastfeeding

One of the most hugely significant reads of my life.

Walnutshell · 22/07/2007 21:05

I think I need the adult version of that book VVV

Toxic Childhood - by Sue Palmer

nightshade · 22/07/2007 21:06

Three in a bed by deborah jackson.

as well as looking at co-sleeping, touches on breast feeding, attachment issues in a range of societies and long term effects on children by virtue of their parenting experience.

will truely test your outlook!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/07/2007 21:06

The Adult version came first I believe Walnut

taxidriver · 22/07/2007 21:07

i agree with penelope leach, you sit and nod while you are reading.. you are so doing it right.

Walnutshell · 22/07/2007 21:08

Maybe I can get The Politics of BF second hand through Amazon, last time I ordered it (months ago) they eventually emailed me to say they couldn't get hold of it.

moondog · 22/07/2007 21:13

Some available on Amazon but check the price!

That 'Milk,Money and Madness' looks interesting too.

Walnutshell · 22/07/2007 21:14

VVV - oh goodness, you're not joking! Now, that looks interesting.

Had a quick glance at 3 in a bed, again, looking good. Thanks. Amazon basket positively bulging, will have to rationalise at some point... Some second hand Politics of BF starting at £24.95.
