Ashes in the Wind by Christopher Bland

So, here is a list of curated books set in Ireland... you can drill further by specific locations/change genre. I like Kate Kerrigan's books, very readable www.tripfiction.com/find-a-book/?location=Ireland&btitle=&bauthor=&genre=Historical

Enjoy!!!

If you haven't read it yet then The heart's invisible furies by John Boyne is mostly set in Ireland. I've also just finished The Wonder (same author as 'Room') which is set in rural Ireland in the 19th century.

I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve heard very good things about The Good People by Hannah Kent.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/05/2019 20:46

Books by Molly Keane, I especially liked Good Behaviour. Also William Trevor, The Ballroom of Romance is my favourite of his.

herbafresca · 02/05/2019 20:51

Deirdre Purcell's The children of Eve was very good, although, the action was set partly in America.

Anything by tana French

Hi

Coming on to second the suggestion of William Trevor - I love The Story of Lucy Gault. Also anything by Colm Toibin set in Ireland - tends to be more recent history - from the 1950's on wards. A Long Long Way by Sebastian Barry is set around World War I and the 1916 rising and is a terrific read. That They May Face the Rising Sun by John McGahern is set in rural Ireland around the time of rural electrification and is a beautiful evocative read about Ireland at that time. Hope some of those might be of interest

The new Douglas Kennedy is brilliant and partly set in Ireland in the past.

At Swim-Two-Birds is odd but so funny that I almost puked laughing each time I read it

Foxglovesandprimroses · 03/05/2019 18:22

Cashelmara by Susan Howatch is lovely if you like historical fiction.

OrangeJuiceandArmchairs · 03/05/2019 18:24

I’m guessing Maeve Binchy isn’t what you’re after Blush

AdaColeman · 03/05/2019 18:25

At Swim Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill is captivating!

3timeslucky · 03/05/2019 18:27

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry

Anything by John McGahern
or Jennifer Johnston

woodhill · 03/05/2019 18:28

Patrick was good but can't remember who wrote it.

JoyceDivision · 03/05/2019 18:28

Sean o'falan's short stories (appreciate not a novel) are fab

woodhill · 03/05/2019 18:28

Yes to Cashelmara

BertieBotts · 03/05/2019 18:28

The Oyster Catcher I really enjoyed.

3timeslucky · 03/05/2019 18:30

Or have a look at Brian Moore

Donal Ryan is contemporary but highly rated (over rated I think but I'm in a minority)

Anne Griffin's When All is Said is not historical, but nor is it entirely contemporary. I really liked it but not sure it counts as what you're looking for.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 03/05/2019 18:30

The Barry Town trilogy by Roddy Doyle

thislido · 03/05/2019 18:31

When you get to lore recent history, anything by Roddy Doyle! I know that sounds ridiculous but I get the impression from family that Ireland has really shifted quite a lot in the last few decades.

Other than that, Brian Friel’s plays are very readable. Maybe Translations, which you could then see at the NT later this year.

thislido · 03/05/2019 18:32

Cross post!

roisinagusniamh · 03/05/2019 18:32
