Literary book review magazine

Hi

I've got precious little time for my beloved reading and books and was thinking of getting a subscription to a magazine of book reviews to help curate what I read and diversify it. I'd like a paper version as I'd like to be offline more than I am now. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hi. I highly recommend NB which is newbooks magazine. Its quarterly and a British publication. Ive had a subscription for 4 years now and love it.

I love this idea. If you want to consider an American version, The New York Times Book Review is the only remaining free-standing publication of its kind.

I would suggest either The Literary Review, The London Review of Books or The Times Literary Supplement. The last two are perhaps more on the academic side but very readable if you like books IMO.

Slightly Foxed is one I really love. Its quarterly and has short essays on old books (largely from the 1930s to 1980s) and I have discovered books, authors and genres I wouldn't really have thought of before.

Another vote for The Literary Review. It's monthly and reviews a wide range of books. Subject headings in the April edition cover Art, Corridors of Power, Technology, Biography, Mind & Body, Foreign Parts, History, Philosophers, Writers, General, Poetry, Cinema, Fiction and Crime. It also includes a monthly profile of an imprisoned writer and details of how to appeal on their behalf.

I love it and have been reading it for years.

I like the Literary Review (I miss Auberon Waugh's columns).

@Bookreader2403 Thanks for the NB recommendation. The 'free' books sound interesting, how much P&P do they charge?

Coming late to this and it’s not a paper, but I have found Backlisted podcast to be amazing for diversifying what I read. Each episode is devoted to one or two older books but it begins with the presenters talking about what they’ve been reading and as both work in and around publishing, there are some great recommendations. I usually end up with at least three ideas of new things to read and it’s really broadened my field of vision.
