Since baby #2 arrived, my reading has totally tanked and I need a real page turner to get me going again. I started American Gods at Christmas and even with my narrow windows for reading time, I’ve made glacially slow progress with it. I need some ideas for good page-turners to get me back in the habit of reading before bed.

I don’t think I can cope with storylines with babies/kids being hurt - too many hormones - but a good thriller, Gone Girl, Girl on the Train type thing, would be perfect. Not chick lit / trashy, but not too thinky either!

Any ideas??

The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton
Our House by Louise Cavendish

Forgot Nine Perfect Strangers by Lyn Moriarty

I like a good psychological thriller too but I'm currently reading Circe by Madeleine Miller which is based on Greek mythology and I can't put it down!

The Girl Before is ok.

I thought Nine Perfect Strangers was absolutely farcical. Started off well but was just ridiculous.

The Woman In The Window is ok. Definitely up your street I think :)

I read Into The Water after The Girl on the Train and was disappointed. :(

The Couple Next Door is good, too. And The Marriage Pact.

A couple of Jodie Picoult ones, too actually.

The Pact.

Vanishing Acts.

Thank you!

Oh my word @madamehooch ...Song of Achilles is my favourite book ever. I tear up a bit thinking about it. Is Circe really good? I’m scared of being disappointed...

Well, it’s meant to be...popped into Sainsbury’s on my way home today, and Circe was on offer for £3. Couldn’t say no, really...

I haven't read Song of Achilles but colleagues and friends have and they've said that Circe is better

Naked in Death, by JD Robb (but beware, it's the start of an addictive series if you like crime with a dash of romance).
Anything by Lois McMaster Bujold (if you like scifi/fantasy, but it's a very realistic world, excellent characters).
Death in Focus, by SR Garrae (crime with a dash of romance)
Sheri Tepper (eco/feminist futuristic sci-fi - but some of it is terrifyingly as if it could be next year)

Shardlake books are who-done-its with a different if historical stuff interests you. Very readable too.

Also to add to the nine perfect strangers debate, don't bother, it's poop. An interesting premise and good first half that is completely wasted and the book goes nowhere. I also guessed that she ended up with him as soon as he turned up in the same place. So predictable. I would recommend a Husband's Secret though, that one was good!
