Eoin Colfer - Artemis Fowl series - any good?

Looking for holiday reading for ds1 (10) - I've picked these up and not really fancied them, tbh, but, then, they're not for me.

Any opinions?

Oh they are GREAT (speaking as an adult who buys them for herself ). Funny, well plotted, they promote intelligence as a good thing - I love them. They have all sorts of little codes built into the margins to be translated as well.

And Eoin himself is a little pixie!

MadEyemarthamooDy · 12/07/2007 21:13

OK, that's good enough for me. I'll get him the first one and see how he likes it. Thank you both!

And I think Artemis is 10/11 in the first book.

BillWeasleyBeast · 12/07/2007 21:26

they are brilliant, very clever and very funny and like LL I buy them for myself

themoon66 · 12/07/2007 21:27

DS has read them all and loved them. Perfect holiday reading for that age group.

LittleLupin · 12/07/2007 21:30

BWB - hurrah, it's not just me! I also have the Anthony Horowitz books - Alex Rider and Power of Five - and the young Bond series by Charlie Higson; they are all excellent.

tribpot · 12/07/2007 21:32

I love them. And discovered recently that Eoin is pronounced Owen and not Ian as I had always thought

LittleLupin · 12/07/2007 21:36

tribpot, I discovered that about half an hour ago!

BillWeasleyBeast · 12/07/2007 22:03

LL, I love the Diana Wynne Jones ones and the susan cooper dark is rising sequence. Oh and of course Phillip Pullman.

Marina · 12/07/2007 22:14

Ds loves them moo. He erm, read the latest one in three days flat on hols (barrelling down the autoroute so lots of time to read).
I think they are perfect for your ds1's age.
We've bought a set of Diana Wynne Jones for this summer on the basis of her being widely recommended for Artemis Fowl fans

nooka · 12/07/2007 22:28

Diana Wynne Jones is the best children's fantasy writer ever (I think!) but I did start reading her in the 70's so they have a lot of sentimental value to me. I'd go for the older one's in general - I think she wrote her best books a while back. I have really enjoyed Garth Nix recently - the one's with the days of the week (ie Mister Monday etc) are I think aimed at younger readers than the ones about Sabriel. Eoin Colfer is enjoyable, but not great I think. I've really enjoyed Charlotte Haptie's books about Otto, which are probably for the same age group, and quite thought prevoking, with good male and female characters as well as fun fantasy. I can't wait for my children to start on these sort of books - then I can justify my children's fiction habit even more

MadEyemarthamooDy · 12/07/2007 22:47

Oooh more posts! Thanks muchly - I shall order forthwith (and possibly get one..or two...or three books that are on my amazon wish list too...well, you've got to get the free P&P, haven't you?)

LittleLupin · 12/07/2007 22:55

I have all the DWJs. HIGHLY recommended.

tribpot · 13/07/2007 19:43

Haven't read DWJ, sounds like I had better so as to be prepared for when ds (currently 2!) says "I say, mater, these Artemis Fowl books are top rate, what else do you have?". Susan Cooper is also fantastic.

Quattrocento · 18/07/2007 20:39

DD LOVES THEM. Really truly loves them. They sound a bit odd to me but I have never read one. Why don't you try one and see?

kneazlechick · 18/07/2007 20:45

My name is kneazlechick and I'm an Artemis Fowl reader.

I got so excited when I saw the lastest one on holiday recently that dh capitulated and let me have it!!!

MadEyemarthamooDy · 18/07/2007 20:46

I ordered the first one from amazon - was dispatched today so it should come soon. I'll let you know what he (we!) think.

kneazlechick · 18/07/2007 20:57

Oooh - really hope he likes them, I love them but don't know any children of a suitable age to recommend them to!!

MadEyemarthamooDy · 18/07/2007 20:58

I'm hoping he's going to like it enough to let me get on with the new Harry Potter in peace

Artemis Fowl books are genius, something really different. The Supernaturalists by Eoin Colfer fantastic too (I thought it was Yo-wun, like the Welsh Ioan!)

puffylovett · 27/07/2007 21:23

come to this quite late, but they are brilliant if you stll need opinions !

MadEyemarthamooDy · 27/07/2007 21:24

He hasn't started it yet - been busy with Harry Potter
