I love reading and much prefer getting stuck into a good read than watching TV in order to unwind of an evening. I'm in a bit of a book rut though and need suggestions of something really gritty that will grip me from the beginning. Normally love thrillers etc. nothing too mushy!! All ideas welcome!

What authors do you normally read?

For thrillers I’d suggest Zoe Sharp, Lee Child and Linwood Barclay.

If you enjoy crime novels: Sara Paretsky, Peter Temple, Sue Grafton, Robert Crais, Val McDermid, Dennis Lehane, John Connolly, Tami Hoag (her police procedurals), Jane Harper, Virginia Lanier (if you can find them), Jane R Goodall, Lisa Unger, Carol O’Connell.

I would recommend Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series, first one is called The Black Echo.

My best book of last year was 'Educated' by Tara Westover, true story of her life but you'd hardly believe it. Gripping.

Close to Home by Cara somebody has been the best crime-thriller I've read this year.

I loved Black Water by Louise Doughty. Gritty and unpredictable.

Circe by Madeleine Miller

Second Close to Home. It's the first in a (currently) three book series by Cara Hunter and they are all good - very believable, which is so often not the case with crime/psychological thrillers.

Naked in Death, by JD Robb (but beware, it's the start of an addictive series if you like crime with a dash of romance).
Anything by Lois McMaster Bujold (if you like scifi/fantasy, but it's a very realistic world, excellent characters).
Death in Focus, by SR Garrae (crime with a dash of romance)
Sheri Tepper (eco/feminist futuristic sci-fi - but some of it is terrifyingly as if it could be next year)
Just recommended them all to someone else too...
