What else will I like?
I love the chronicles but need something else.
Any ideas?

Oh shameless placemark! I love St Marys and need something similar to cheer me up at the moment.

Bryant and May series by Christopher Fowler

About two elderly detectives working in London's Peculiar Crimes Unit.

Nothing to add, but I love the Chronicles of St Mary's too!

TheFirstOHN · 14/03/2019 21:05

The Modern Magick series has a similar feel.

As does The Invisible Library

I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I haven't read the others suggested here so shall look at those too. Thanks.

TheFirstOHN · 14/03/2019 21:10

I've also been enjoying the Rivers of London series.

The genre is different to CoSM but the humour is similar.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 14/03/2019 21:28

So many books @TheFirstOHN you absolute star you!

Novia · 14/03/2019 21:32

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next books (first one is The Eyre Affair). He did it first and he did it best (IMHO). Though I do love St Mary's and the next one is out in April!

KindleAndCake · 14/03/2019 21:36

Wow Thankyou, will take a look Smile

Definitely Thursday Next.

And although I haven’t actually read the COSM, the descriptions I’ve read remind me of To Say Nothing of The Dog by Connie Willis which is lovely and light (she wrote other time-travel books with the same setting but with very different moods).

Binglebong · 14/03/2019 21:48

So many lovely new books to check out! Ard you all members of the Facebook group? Well worth joining if not.

Binglebong · 14/03/2019 21:51

Why does that link to Rivers of London call the first one Midnigh Riots? I'm confused!

FindPrimeLorca · 14/03/2019 21:56

It’s called Midnight Riot in the US.

mum2jakie · 14/03/2019 21:59

Try A Stitch In Time by Amanda James and its sequel Cross Stitch.

KindleAndCake · 16/03/2019 20:38

I've downloaded the first Thursday Next book. Thanks for the suggestions Smile

Kage Baker - although the later ones in the series get pretty weird

I really enjoyed Jodi Taylor’s other books as well; her Elizabeth Cage and Throckmorton Farm books. The latter make a terrific comfort read when you need a bit of cheering up. Who wouldn’t want an invisible horse for a best friend?

I’ve also just discovered Sarah Painter’s books, particularly the two (so far) Crow investigations. They’re urban fantasy and very deftly written.

Pretty much everyone recommends To Say Nothing of the Dog, which is a very funny time travel novel. Connie Wells also wrote another time travel book, The Doomsday Book, which is much darker.

A couple of Susanna Kearsley’s books have a time-travel theme - I’d suggest her on general principles because she’s a good writer.
