Today's special offer from Audible is Ulysses - that'll be a 'no thanks' from me

I tried to read it several times and never got past page 3. I did listen to a sample to see if it would be good for falling asleep to, but the narrator had already thought of that and is incredibly perky in his delivery, possibly he had to be that way to keep himself awake. Grin Twenty-seven hours of 'I haven't a clue what's going on' would just be too much for me.

Yes I saw that. I have to say I did think "hmmmm, yeah, probably not ." 🤔

I'm sure I'm just a philistinine

I'm probably one too Grin I have read some tricky stuff, like Dostoyevski (which I hated) and I live on the same road as his great-great nephew (not entirely sure how many 'greats' but the surname is still Joyce) so that must count for something?

I managed The Dubliners for an A level way back when but Ulysses?
No thanks!

What I love is that the daily deals totally skew the 'what’s popular' suggestions - it’ll look like audible listeners git high brow for a little while there!

I foresee a certain sort of man downloading it and fast forwarding it 26 and a half hours to get to the bit at the end.

A few years ago I got chatting to an American tourist at Powerscourt waterfall. She was travelling with a group who were all literature students and had come to see Joyce's Dublin (other authors were also featured I think, but she loved Joyce best). She was very nice about it, but clearly hugely disappointed that Dublin and the Dubliners had let themselves move with the times instead of sticking with the 19th/early 20th century. She wasn't some head-in-the clouds teen either, she was at least late 40s so should have known better. Grin
