they have advised us that she should be reading everyday or perhaps reading a story with us.

We, as parents, are both non-readers in the sense that it's not n enjoyable hobbie for either of us. Of course we CAN read but we just don't IYKWIM!

So, I'd like to encourage dd to read more and I believe a first step would be for her to see us reading and to read stories with her.

Getting to the point.....she is 7 years old, not a girly girl but more a tom boy. Can anyone recommend some good books that we can sit down and read together.

We have just started on the Roald Dahl books with DS1 (who is 6)
He certainly can't read them all by hiself, but it is still nice to read to them and I think they learn loads from that. the vocabulary is amazing and varied, and the stories are great too.
The book people ae currently doing a box set for £12.99 which wwe have got
Roald Dahl Collection

My DD2 is 7 and loves the Famous Five. She also loves animal stories such as Sheltie the Shetland Pony. I really recommend having a browse through Book People and also Red House Books - they have the Enid Blyton St Clare's set at a huge discount at the moment which your DD might like.

how about Pippi Longstocking?? DD really enjoyed it, and Pippi is a real go out and do something type of girl.

Agree with MMWP Roald Dhal is great. Both My ds (7) and dd (3.5) love them. They also have them on audio cd and love listening to them on their own.

They also like Dr Suess with all the rhyming words. We've read Cat in the Hat many times {grin]

Amelia Bedelia books are quite funny

Michael Morpurgo books are really good, you can read a bit each if they're slightly beyond her.
My Friend Walter
The Wreck of the Zanibar etc

Sophie stores (Dick King Smith), My Naughty Little Sister, Horrid Henry, Rainbow Fairies (bit monotonous though)

oh and Usborne do some good reading books - mixture of revamped classics, myths and fairy tales and slightly whacky fiction and non fiction books - in several stages of diffculty.

I was going to say Pippi Longstocking and Michael Morpurgo books but someone else beat me to it.

We just read Fairy Dust by Gwyneth Rees and my DSs loved it.
