Hi all, would love some recommendations for 15yo DS, loves anything with wizards (!) or more generally books where there's a bit of a mystery perhaps linked to supernatural powers.

Recent hits have been -

First couple of Rivers of London
Prince of Thorns trilogy
First couple of Hidden Academy
Harry Dresden series

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for any suggestions.

His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman

Pumpkin Butcher has also started a Steampunk-type series. The first is called The Aeronaut's Windlass. It's not as good as Dresden (well, from book 3 Dresden is good, anyway) but it's still a decent read.

Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson about a young man who yearns to learn magic. Also his Mistborn and Reckoners series.

Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom series which starts with Sabriel, I think.

I’ve been enjoying the Invisible Library series about an intrepid librarian, her dragon apprentice and a famous detective.

RL King writes a really fun series about Alistair Stone, a contemporary magician. I they’d have real appeal for a 15 year old who likes books about magic.

Another excellent series is Michael Pryor’s Laws of Magic. I reckon he’d really enjoy them.

Also Michael Scott’s The Alchemyst and following.

And Holly Black’s The Iron Trial. Not as good as the above, but very readable.

Thanks very much all -

He didn't get on with the Dark Materials trilogy but I think he tried them too young (a few years back) as I loved them.

He did read the Iron Trial books, so thank you for the other suggestions which sound really interesting.

So many fantastic recommendations that I never would have stumbled across solo, thank you all for taking the time to reply (and in some
cases for sharing the reading tastes of a 15yo boy, as do I at times!)

Ilona Andrews, particularly the Kate Daniels series, or Patricia Briggs.

It's been a while since i read them but i enjoyed The Magicians Guild trilogy by Trudi Canavan

Urban/moden magic sent in London/UK:
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is the daddy of other London type books
A Madness of Angels - Kate Griffin
The Laundry Files - Lovecraftian bureaucracy - gets dark as the series goes on though
Shadow Police - Paul Cornell - again possibly some themes will be too dark/bitter for a YA
The Oversight - Charlie Fletcher

Set in US:
Young Gods by Neil Gaiman
The Iron Druid series
The Demon Accords - John Conroe - totally cheesy guilty pleasure by a guy who read his daughter's copy of Twilight and decided if he had vampire powers he would have had a lot more fun with them! Lots of guns and limousines

Honourable mention for the Dark is Rising sequence - but he's probably too old now, he will have to wait til he's at the re-reading children's books stage
