How do you alternate between books you own, library books and Ebooks?

Is it just me who struggles with alternating them? I always feel as though I'm neglecting one or the other and find myself reading my own paper books but neglecting my Kindle books or reading my Kindle books and not reading library books. I have 8 library books right now that I've realised I don't really want to read just now and that isn't uncommon for me.

I'm a mood reader so terrible with TBR lists. How do you do it? Do you alternate between them at regular intervals or just read whatever takes your fancy?

Library books due back take priority. Apart from that what I fancy. I’m terrible for starting books and not finishing them.

For the last few years kindle books or books I own have taken priority. Usually second hand ebay/amazon purchases. This year I am planning to use my local library more. It has had its hours reduced significantly over the last few years so I feel I should support it more. I still have loads of unread books at home though so need to strike a balance.

I only ever read Kindle books now

I have just started listening to audiobooks, either via the library or YouTube. At work we are now allowed to use headphones so I decided to try audiobooks rather than listen to music all the time.

I tend to have three on the go. An audio book in the car, a 'proper' book, and a book on my phone's kindle app for when I'm out and about and need something to read easily. However this is in direct conflict with what I teach at work which is stop starting, start finishing! But my main driver in terms of choosing, is what I fancy next. I'm always a great advocate for that strategy!

I don't have a kindle so for me it's just my own books or library books, but I really do have this problem! Last year I went to the library a lot and found myself taking up upwards of 15 books each time. I just see something I want to read and can't leave it... What if I never find it again...

Meanwhile I was also recievving/buying too many new books which weren't getting read as the library ones always took priority (what with having a deadline and all that). So this year I am going to avoid getting more from the library to get through more of my own books. It's going to be tough though, as I need to go there anyway to take back old overdue books.

I have such a pile of unread physical books that I don't actually use the library. I know I should but I never seem to find the time and hate the pressure to get things back. I tend to read on my kindle when my hubby is at home ( he works away) as I can read late in bed without switching the light on and keeping him awake!

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 02/01/2019 18:39

I just pick what I fancy. I have huge amounts unread on shelves and on my kindle. ATM I have a book and am reading something easy on kindle for bed. Same DH light issue as pp. it usually works out that I read one actual book then a Kindle book.

If you don't fancy reading the library books, take them back. You can always get them out again. Or buy them on kindle when they are on offer - I use ereaderiq to track books and buy when they are 99p.

Which medium do you prefer? I too only read kindle now and I don't think that's a bad thing. Well it's probably bad for the decline of libraries, but out of all tech, the ereader is the one thing I could never give up and maybe libraries have had their day when you can buy a relatively cheap device that doesn't consume much power and it gives you access to millions of books and for me it's been excellent value due to ereaderiq. I'll never run out of books to read. Contrast with libraries, which weren't very good in my city. You have to get there, and half the time the books weren't on the shelves even though the online catalogue said it was. And they charge £1.05 to reserve a book.

I tried a couple of paper books that I bought and just didn't get on with them. I couldn't get comfortable and couldn't read at night like I can with my paperwhite - we don't have bedside lamps.

I don't listen to audio books as I listen to podcasts in the car. I'm not sure I could follow a book properly while driving to be honest.

My TBR pile is huge due to buying books I want to read when they are 99p. I have about 400 unread books and another 300 in my ereaderiq watch list. To me it's an advantage and probably a disadvantage that my TBR pile is virtual as obviously if I had 400 physical books sitting there, it would be elephant in the room size. So I just need to get on and read them.

Oh god, I get stressed with books, there's the kindle ones that are free that I get through Amazon Prime, library books I can download and library books that I actually get from the library. I do like the actual books I get from the library, and can always reserve books for a small fee, the ebooks from the library are a bit hit and miss as they don't seem to have many up to date ones, the kindle books are my usual go to on a Saturday afternoon when I don't have anything else to grab me.

I do prefer a real life book, but we go away in our camper van a lot and reading on my tablet is easier and takes up less room. I very rarely buy books, but when I do its either 2nd hand from a charity shop or on offer on Kindle

XingMing · 03/01/2019 20:26

All three, in about equal measure. I currently have five (relatively trashy) thrillers from the library, a few 99p ebooks on the kindle, and two unread non-fiction waiting. I like the kindle best for the ease/lightness of reading in bed, and for the paperwhite screen.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 05/01/2019 09:34

I just read/listen to what I'm in the mood for. At the moment I'm listening to The Thousands Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, on my kindle is the third Rivers of London book and my own dead tree book is Jeeves and the King of Clubs. I have some library books but not currently reading one. I just keep renewing them and then take them back if I don't get around to reading them. I'm in the mood for lightheaded at the moment so Jeeves is getting my attention.
I find it much easier to switch books if they are quite different, otherwise I can start getting the plots mixed up, I never read more than one crime book at a time.

gamerwidow · 05/01/2019 09:38

I only read one book at a time so this is not a problem for me. I read ebooks exclusively and our library only allows a max of two downloads at a time and they have to be read within 3 weeks otherwise the license expires which helps focus the mind and get them read.
