My 'to read' shelf has become a bookcase

Help! What shall I read next? Help me work my way through all these books before I buy any more.

I get the man booker shortlist's every year but have failed to read all of 2017s in time and have now added the 2018 collection to my groaning shelves! Want to try and clear some back log before I start on those.

Anyone see any favourites of theirs they can recommend? Or any to not bother with? Is anyone reading anything off here I can keep them company with?

His Bloody Project is great! The Stieg Larrsons are good page turners.

moonlight1705 · 31/12/2018 12:10

Ooh looks like my bookshelves! I love Ken Follett but they are big reads and the same with Kate Mosse - really interesting concept but might take a while.

I wasn't overly kern on the Essex Serpent but others have liked it. The Toy Makers is ok but not that riveting. The Girl with Dragon Tattoo is a great series to read and I found it easy/quick to get into.

I loved the Song of Achilles plus her new one called Circe.

I might try and find some of the ones you have on there that I haven't read yet Smile

SeaViewBliss · 31/12/2018 12:12

Lincoln in the Bardot is fucking weird but I really enjoyed it.

DerelictWreck · 31/12/2018 12:14

Ooo thanks all! Sorry for the shiny pictures - the bookcase is in between two big windows.

Let me know what you're eying up and I'll give you a review once read!

His bloody project and Lincoln are both still waiting for me from last years MB list. So is Winter, all of which I've heard great things about so must get to.

Loved Circe, which is putting me off Achilles a bit! Is it as good?

You've got some really good books there. My unread shelf shelves is dangerously out of control.

I am going to try very hard not to buy more than I read in 2019 Hmm

Jacksback · 31/12/2018 12:18

Still Alice was excellent , I have reread it and I don’t often do that
The Larson books are good , a fast paced thriller type book
I read hot milk , but can’t rememer much about it tbh

DerelictWreck · 31/12/2018 12:24

I've been avoiding Still Alice a bit as it's pretty close to home. Sometimes you have to psych yourself up for the tough ones! Same reason I haven't tackled Handmaid's Tale yet - been avoiding it for years even though I've seen the series!

I think I tried Stigg Larson years ago and it was just such overly detailed writing I abandoned it pretty quickly! Will give it another go!

I’m in the same position...it’s wonderful!

showmethegin · 31/12/2018 13:59

I read the girls on holiday and didn't like it too much. Think the author lost their way half way through. Worked as a pick up and put down holiday book though.

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2019 09:24

My favourites were Essex Serpent, Milkman, His Bloody Project and The Railway Man - some of my best reads of the last couple of years. Second 2 were page turners, first two also very absorbing after first hundred pages.

I read Song of Achilles after Circe, I didn’t love quite as much, but it is still a good read and you’ll rip through it.

toomuchsplother · 01/01/2019 17:56

Lincoln in the Bardo is the best book I have read in years.
His Bloody Project and The Essex Serpent are great too.

VelvetGreen · 01/01/2019 18:38

Agree Song of Achilles is brilliant. I've not really enjoyed the Labyrinth trilogy - I love the subject matter but there is something very cold about her characters, which made me not care very much.

ScribblyGum · 01/01/2019 18:47

Lincoln in the Bardo m, Autumn and Do Not Say We Have Nothing are my favourites from your TBR bookcase.

I have a TBR window sill of guilt and silent nagging but now I covet a bookcase.

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2019 18:49

What you need is the Random Number Generator!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/01/2019 18:53

Did I see Half of a Yellow Sun on there? LOVE that. One of my favourite novels.

The Book of You is very readable and you should whisk through it very quickly.

Loved The Song of Achilles.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 01/01/2019 21:25

Satsuki
Should I persevere with Milkman. I recently bought it and I'm not that immersed yet.
OP, LOVE that bookcase!

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2019 21:45

lloydcole The style doesn’t change but I found after a good chunk of it I got used to the rhythm of it and then found it flowed really easily and I ended up loving it. It helps if you can imagine it as a chatty, gossipy witty voice complaining about her family with lots of anecdotes and digressions. I found it really funny once I stopped trying so hard to decipher it. So I would say give it a good go, but it has seemed to split people a bit, all depends whether you can get on with the style I think.

TheCrowFromBelow · 01/01/2019 21:53

Thank you for posting your shelves! They are great inspiration for my 2019 reading list.

The Tea Planter’s Wife was terrible, if you’d like to take one off the shelf

Little fires everywhere was really good.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 01/01/2019 22:03

Thanks for tip Satsuki. I'll keep going with it Wink

Chickoletta · 01/01/2019 23:30

The Stranger's Child and Labyrinth are both excellent but intense. I loved them both but you need to be able to get absorbed in them for a while.

jeapurs54 · 07/01/2019 20:25

I have read Then she was gone - Lisa Jewell and The Book of You by Claire Kendall both of which I really enjoyed. You have a great selection on your shelf, some of which I also have but not yet read some of the steg Larson ones which I keep meaning to read but others come ahead. I cannot keep up with all the new ones of favourite authors. Good Luck with making your way through them.

Soupswoop · 08/01/2019 11:18

Another vote for Little Fires Everywhere. Brilliant. I see you have got Everything I never told you as well. Love love love Celeste Ng. Got to ask - if this is your unread shelf, do you have a giant read shelf as well? How big is your house!
