Am thinking

Julia Donaldson

Helen Cooper

possibly Lauren Child

Note that anyone who is ALREADY a classic writer (eg Shirley Hughes) is Out on the grounds of obviousness.

Thoughts

Hairy McLary books by Lynley Dodd.

OTher than that I'd agree with the ones you've put down (except Helen Cooper cos never come accross her).

lauzie · 25/06/2007 18:36

Julia Donaldson deffo and Giles Andreae

pollywollydoodle · 25/06/2007 18:54

anthony browne.... "my mum" and "my dad"...great rhyme and something new to see every time (sorry if he is a classic already!)

Lucy Cousins if my daughter is any judge

fillyjonk · 25/06/2007 19:05

what, purple ronnie guy?

Why HIM?

I know he wrote the book about houses and mummies but we are looking for a consistent record here, surely

anthony browne wrote 'gorilla' and 'willy the champ' didn't he? I remember reading them as a kid so they must be a few years old. They are fantastic though.

That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell - my nomination for future classic.

Emma Chichester Clark also - a big love of my DD3.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 25/06/2007 19:27

It's interesting trying to work out what will endure.
Donaldson, definitely, but Charlie and Lola might date.
What about David McKee - Elmer, Not Now Bernard?

silverfrog · 25/06/2007 19:29

Giles Andreae has also written Giraffes can't dance, The Lion who wanted to Love, Rumble in the Jungle, Commotion in the Ocean, Farmyard Hullaballoo (can you tell dd1 is a fan )

Would agree with Julia Donaldon (will anyone disagree?)

Have just come across a series about Daisy Duck (can't remember who wrote as am hopeless, and can't look it up as books are in dd's room...) which are lovely

BorisofWales · 25/06/2007 19:31

Another one for Julia Donaldson, the Gruffalo is DDs current favourite book.

bobbiewickham · 26/06/2007 10:43

Oliver Jeffers - How to Catch a Star, Lost and Found and The Incredible Book - Eating Boy.
Wonderful artwork and sweet stories.
Love him

sarz · 26/06/2007 17:29

I agree with Julia Donaldson because i love the gruffalo, but not many of the others.

I think Lauren Child is great, Not just Charlie and Lola, but Story book Wolfs is great, and the others which name escape me!! there is another about story books.

FrannyandZooey · 26/06/2007 17:43

I love Sarah Garland but find her under-appreciated generally

plus Trish Cooke

cornsilk · 26/06/2007 17:48

Antony Browne books
Where's Wally!

CorrieDale · 26/06/2007 17:55

Emma Chichester Clark definitely! DS loves the Blue Kangaroo series. Gorgeous illustrations. Also Mick Inkpen.

Obviously as mentioned earlier in the thread Shirley Hughes is already a classic but I want to put in a word for Ella's Big Chance, a picture book by her for older children if anybody doesn't already know it. Truly a classic of the future - and Red House are selling it off for £2.99 at the moment.

booge · 26/06/2007 18:07

Julia Donaldson agreed, mainly for "Room on the Broom" in this house.

fillyjonk · 27/06/2007 06:57

oh ella's big chance is great. also the lion and the unicorn. she is STILL writing, she is about 200.

I really think julia donaldson is underappreciated, she writes in Proper Verse, its great that thats possible with absurd lyrics iykwim.

helen cooper is fabulous, the angela carter of kids books.

fillyjonk · 27/06/2007 06:59

oh and any illustrator who doesn't show houses as being messy is of low standing with me i am afraid

DD(3 and a half) and I also love Lenny Henry's "Charlie and the Big Chill"....as you'd expect it's very exhuberant ....

Warning! your child will say "blinkey, blonkey, blimEY" and "mums don't know ANYthing about shopping" a lot after reading it and they will expect you to teach them fancy dances that pre-date your own birth ...
