Hello, I used to read a lot of books and have hundreds in the house. However since having my son nearly four years ago I have only read one or two and I am missing just carving out that time where you can get lost in another world.

I usually read legal/crime/thrillers, but it’s been a tough year and I just want to read some chick lit and I don’t know where to start!

I would be very grateful for your suggestions.

Thank you.

Why mummy swears
Why mummy drinks

Like you I normally read crime & thrillers, but if I feel like some easy going chick lit that isn't badly written I go for Cathy Kelly.

Thanks @greentulips I think I may know the answer to that! Lol.

I have found a chick lit site too so will have a gander on there. Should have done a google first!

Paige Toon very light but great.

WaterBird · 05/12/2018 08:23

Hot Mess: Bridget Jones of a New Generation by Lucy Vine is really, really funny.
You might also enjoy Lindsie Kelk and Sophie Kinsella. I really liked Kinsella's last book, Surprise Me, despite low opinions I have read online.

theredjellybean · 05/12/2018 08:26

Rebecca chance... Funny, easy reading, sort of the modern jolly Cooper
And some of her books have very very good thinly disguised pastiche of the Royal family.

Trills · 05/12/2018 08:31

How light are you looking for?

I love Marian Keyes, very readable, funny in places, but her books usually have some more serious themes and would be taken much more seriously if the author were a man and the book were about a man and his relationships and issues.

Mhairi MacFarlane is in a similar vein.

Two specific recommendations of books that (I think) came out this year) and are amusing and nice:

Oh My God, What A Complete Aisling (Irish 20-something woman with very set expectations of how her life will turn out has to figure out what to do when she splits with her fiance)

Sofia Khan Is Not Obliged (the dating diary of a modern Muslim 30ish woman in London)

@Theredjellybean
I love reading about the royals. Are Chance's books set during the modern royal period or do they chronicle ancient history?

Cressida McLaughlin writes beautiful grown up chick lit, just the right amount of realism & smouldering looks Grin

VQ1970 · 05/12/2018 11:49

I read a lot of Fiona Walker books a few years ago, I kept them and intend reading them again when I get the chance. They're easy reading.

I'm going to look up some of the other suggestions on this thread.

Janet Evanovich, Stephanie plum series. Light and really fun to read.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 05/12/2018 13:41

If you like books about royalty, The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan (the writers behind Go Fug Yourself), is very romantic and very funny.

I’ve read, over a couple of cold days, Kylie Scott’s girl meets rock star series Stage Dive 1 - 4. I think the first one is Play. Unashamed wish fulfilment romance, but hugely entertaining.

I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the couple of Cecelia Ahern’s books. I was being a reading snob and got my just desserts, because she’s a very thoughtful writer.

florentina1 · 05/12/2018 14:00

Elizabeth Aston and Rachel Hore are my choice when I want something light.

My absolute favourite read is Magpie Murders, which is two books in one.

Anne Granger, Mitchell and Markby books are amusing detective stories. I like them because it is not obvous ‘Whodunnit’

For when you are back on the heavier stuff Laura Wilson writes about Detective Stratton. Great nostalgic read, if you are as old a me,

daphine2004 · 06/12/2018 00:24

Hi all! Thanks for the suggestions!

I have ordered the why mummy swears/drinks and a Christmas Paige Toon one.

I have read Cecila Aherne, Sophie Kinsella and Marian Keyes in the past but could not remember which ones I had read!

I’ll definitely be dipping in to some of the other suggestions.

I was quite excited by a Swedish tradition (think it's Sweden anyway), where they give books and spend Christmas Eve reading them. I’ll be doing that this year too.

Rebecca Wells Divine secrets of the ya ya sister hood is a really light read, Joanne Harris also one of my favourite authors hope this helps

theredjellybean · 06/12/2018 20:24

@waterbird

Its current royals very very lightly disguised

Clawdy · 07/12/2018 18:56

Lulu Taylor's novels are a good read, and often set in winter , so great for this time of year. Several of them have "Snow" in the title!
