Would love to do it but wondering how it works.

I've never heard of this. What is it?

It's more of a publishing industry phenomenon, where the bulk of new books are published just before Christmas for the gift market. The UK equivalent is earlier, in October: www.theguardian.com/books/2017/oct/05/mary-berry-nadiya-hussain-super-thursday-harry-potter-dan-brown

On a personal level it is just about giving people books for Christmas - which is something you can do anyway! (You could always use Nordic patterned paper or give them Nordic books if that made it feel more like the Icelandic tradition for you)

Sounds like a pretty normal Christmas eve for a household where people like reading. Probably why I hadn't registered that before when I read previous accounts of it. (Also have one parent from a country where Christmas eve presents are the historical norm.)

Sounds fab

I first heard of this when I listened to an Icelandic crime writer talking at the Edinburgh Book Festival .. I think it was Ragnar Jonasson.

The way he described it sounded brilliant. People really tried hard to choose carefully which books to give as presents and everyone looked forward to their new books and spent Christmas Eve reading them. It just sounded really cosy and nice.

I guess you start with your family and tell your friends about it and spread the word .. thanks for the reminder OP; I might give it a go this year Smile

I haven’t done it but it does sound lovely. We usually don’t read on Christmas Eve though as we are busy prepping and then when the D.C. are in bed we have a Wine with the DSIL.
