I wondered what everyone is reading at the moment. My latest book is Antony Beevor's Berlin. A nice cheery one for sunny days.

I'm reading Coetzee's Disgrace. S'OK so far but I'm not staying up late to finish it.

OhNo40 · 21/06/2007 17:00

Nobody's Child by Kate Adie - a look at foundlings and adopted children in various parts of the world.
After that I have a Kathy Reichs, the latest Jeffrey Deaver and a Lee Childs in my sights - far less worthy but good reads all the same.

ntsmum · 21/06/2007 17:03

a Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry-loving it

suedonim · 21/06/2007 17:04

I read that recently. It's slow but it gets better.

Rubyslippers · 21/06/2007 17:08

Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreeve
Utterly wonderful

sparklesandwine · 21/06/2007 17:09

has anyone read 'The secret life of a slummy mummy'?

just wanted to know if it would be worth buying or not really

MrsWeasley · 21/06/2007 17:09

HARRY POTTER

Quattrocento · 21/06/2007 17:10

Berlin is fabulous but maybe not as fabulous as Stalingrad? What do you think?

I'm reading Mrs De Winter (Susan Hill) sort of a sequel to Rebecca. It's hard work and tbh I'm not sure it's going to be worth it.

Love to know more about Disgrace.

I read Disgrace a few years back. I thought it was good. Takes a while to get going though.

I'm reading "The Club" by Mandasue Heller at the mo.

I"ve jsut ordered 'Memory Keeper's Daughter' from my local library, looking forward to reading that

currently reading 'Small Island;. so far really liking it ( just first few chapters so far)
and would like to attempt 'Time Travellers Wife' again, I just can't get into it

Diplidophus · 21/06/2007 17:15

Just finished 'Book of Dave' Will Self. Took me a while to get into it but really enjoyed it once there.

Just started something else by someone I can't remember and can't be bothered to go upstairs and look! It's about a boy who can tell if someone is lying.

I enjoyed Disgrace but as mentioned didn't find it a page turner. More a worthy, moving book. I have had a fine Balance on ym book shelf for years - never got round to it. Is it worth it?

Diplidophus · 21/06/2007 17:17

Personally think Memory Keeper;s daughter was over-rated. However I read it straight after the KiteRunner. Both deal with guilt and secrets but Kite Runner was so good, anything would be disappointing afterwards.

Firstly can I point the error in the OP; it is not 'summer', it has rained for 2 weeks, it is freezing, I have the heating on, it is dark as Hades, I have used my lightbox to combat SAD this morning.....all of this on the Solstice!!
Obviously this is not affecting me in any way, DP loves my sunny summer self and is not working late to stay out of my way......but that's another story.

So, I've just read 'Risk of Darkness' Sobernow, what you do think of Susan Hill? I love them, probably the best police procedural I've read in ages. I'm just reading Anne Pery's 'Longspoon Lane'; I enjoy her vision of Victorian life, it's so different than the history books.
I read Tad Williams' 'Shadowplay' last week, The way he weaves the different storylines together is so clever.

I'm off to put on another cardi and to cuddle up with a cupa and my book. I had envisioned a long walk, then home to supper in the garden but that probably going to happen at Halloween!!

Earthymama · 21/06/2007 17:34

I've seen the in OP Sorry!!

MingMingtheWonderPet · 21/06/2007 18:39

HAve just finished 'We need to talk about Kevin' by Lionel Shriver and am following it up with Jilly Cooper's 'Wicked' just to cheer myself up a bit

slayerette · 21/06/2007 18:51

I'm reading Close Range by Annie Proulx - short story collection including Brokeback Mountain. 'If you can't fix it, you've got to stand it'

Also reading Marshmallows for Breakfast - cheap at Tesco!

And ploughing through Labyrinth by Kate Mosse - interesting but not as much of a page turner as I'd hoped...

clerkKent · 22/06/2007 13:00

Am I the only one who gets most of his books secondhand? Reading Journey into Russia by Laurens van der Post (1964) - an extensive trip through Krushchev's Soviet Union. Very interesting on the character of the people. Even then the Chechens were struggling to retain their identity.
