Just reread this, last read it nearly twenty years ago. It's such a good story. I so so wish he would write a sequel set today. The first generation would be in their late twenties.

I read it back then too, loved it. Watched a movie too which was good. I think I should get back into books, maybe they won't give me nightmare s now I'm a grown up!

Worieddd · 12/11/2018 19:48

I only just read it recently.
I think it is actually one of my favourite books ever.

I never actually thought of a sequel. That would be bloody amazing.

Kannet · 12/11/2018 20:04

I have read a lot of books and I think it's probably my favourite as well ( closely followed by the passage). It's full of flawed and interesting Characters. I have heard it may bei being made into a new mini series. Hopefully they don't ruin it

Read it 25 years ago on holiday in Spain. Brilliant. I still say I’m coming down with a touch of the Captain Tripps when I get a cold.Grin

My kids and DP are like Hmm

I just finished listening to it on Audible, nearly 48 hours, God, it was good! I totally zoned out to the World around me when listening to it. I was a bit daunted by the size of the book (seemingly over 1,200 pages for the original, longer edition), so the Audiobook was the perfect solution. The narrator was excellent. So glad I went for it, I've read a lot of Stephen King, but always put The Stand on the long finger. Well worth an Audible credit, if anyone is considering it.

Amazing book. Read it about 5 years ago and will definitely reread at some point. I was initially slightly put off by how long it was but then it felt like it could have been soooo much longer and I really didn't want it to end!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/11/2018 19:37

Best post-apocalyptic novel ever. Have read it four or five times and will certainly re-read at some point.

PepeLePew · 24/11/2018 07:51

One of my favourite novels. I even forgive the slightly dodgy not-quite-ending because I love it so much. I recommend it lots to people who say “I’d never read Stephen King”, and those that try it usually love it.

birdsdestiny · 24/11/2018 07:56

I loved it. I would worry a sequel would ruin it for me. I think it would be quite a different book if he wrote it now. His portrayal of men and women has become more nuanced.

swampytiggaa · 24/11/2018 08:04

It’s one of my favourites 😁 my teens love it too 😁

somewheresorted · 24/11/2018 08:11

I love it too, one of my favourites and have read it several times.

Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon is another great post-apocalyptic read.

Kannet · 28/11/2018 13:49

I really enjoyed swan song. Loved lucifiers hammer as well, although that is very much "of its time" and is a little bit racist and sexist in places

Kannet · 11/05/2019 18:39

I'm very excited for this mini series and the one that's in the works based on Wizard and Glass which is my favourite Dark Tower
book

Kannet · 11/05/2019 18:46

I have never read the dark tower series. Always seemed a bit daunting

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2019 19:02

First one I read was Wizard and Glass as I didn't realise it was part of a series. You can read it as a stand alone novel and learn about Roland when he was a teenager before getting into the whole Dark Tower quest stuff

NannaNoodleman · 11/05/2019 19:27

Oh wow! I read this over 20 years ago. I think I must have a dusty copy in the attic that needs rehoming on the bookshelves.

Fluffiest · 11/05/2019 19:38

Aw I love The Stand too. I'm listening to the audio book at the moment.
I was gushing to DH today about how complex the character's journeys are. Its like each character is given a choice after the plague, do they want to be better people or not?

Larry, for example, rises to the challenge and his journey is all about changing from a selfish prick to a selfless hero.

Harold and Nadine are really interesting because they wrestle with what side to fall on.

I could spend all day analysing the stand characters because the whole story is about choices and destiny and responsibility.... I have spent a long time overthinking this one!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/05/2019 20:58

I love Wizard and Glass. The story of Roland and Susan Delgado. I know a Stephen King is very successful commercially, but I also think he’s very underrated as a writer.

U2HasTheEdge · 13/05/2019 17:22

My favourite book ever!
