My DD, 35, would like books for Christmas, no chicklit, what can I get her, bearing in mind she's read practically everything. Anything anyone can recommend in the literary fiction line, Booker list etc please?

If she can get to Bath, there is a wonderful “book spa” Where they will chat to you about what you like and being you some you haven’t read yet included in the price:

I have just looked at the website Ravens, and it seems ideal! Unfortunately she doesn't live near Bath, but I see they do gift vouchers to receive books by post, so I may give her that. Many thanks for the suggestion.

I was given 3 books from Persephone Books last Christmas which was one of my favourite presents. The ones I had were Harriet by Elizabeth Jenkins, The Victorian Chaise Longue by Margarita Laski, and The World that Was Ours by Hilda Bernstein. If you look at their website there are summaries of each of their books and you can search by different topics. They specialise in republishing interesting out of print books, usually novels that focus on social history and women's lives. I think they do a discount for buying 3 and they are lovely looking books, very nice for a gift.

Oh, thank you hippo, I will look them up.

hippo I have wanting to read 'The Victorian Chaise- Longue ', as I remember seeing a tv adaptation of it back in the early 60s, and was mightily impressed by it. (Yes, I am that old!)

Ooh, yes, Persephone is a good shout - i got my mum a six month subscription with them one Christmas: i chose 6 titles and they sent her one a month as a mystery parcel which she loved. The only problem was finding six cheerful, non-harrowing novels as much of their stuff seems to be a bit downbeat. I think Greenery Street was the favourite.

The Folio Society do lovely editions of all sorts of books. If she has a favourite author, a beautiful edition would make a special gift.
For example: www.foliosociety.com/au/the-handmaid-s-tale.html

Otherwise hardcover editions of Booker winners and others make nice presents. Biblio.com is a good place to start.

The Map of Love, Ahdaf Soueif.
An Equal Music, Vikram Seth.

A book club membership? I belong to one where you say which books/authors you like and they send you one each month. All my selections have been excellent so far. I subsequently bought gift membership for people who have equally been impressed. You can buy for 3 months, 6 months, a year

Sorry they don't send you the books you say you like they send you ones in a similar vein.
