dd1 has finally got into books, although she's had no problem reading she just hasn't particularly 'got' reading. I'm an avid reader and was as a child, so stupidly thought she'd be like me.....Anyway in the last few weeks she's really been enjoying books, but we're running out. She says she wants adventure stories for girls, she's also decided the rainbow magic books are all the same (hooray) - I think she's just a bit too old for them now. So, any ideas? I don't think it just needs to be adventure stories, she's also enjoyed Heidi, Milly Molly Mandy - tried Mallory Towers, but is a bit luke warm about them.

The Faraway tree? My 7yo DD loves them. Or there are various pony books.

Unfortunately my DD still likes the fairy books

my dd is age 7 and she enjoys the Roald Dahl books, and also Horrid Henry.

There's a series of books by Magdalen Nabb about Josie Smith which she might like if she liked Milly MM. Not sure if they are still available - try amazon.

DH told me to tell you about books by his friend Andy Stanton. They are aimed at 7/8/9 yo.

(Sorry can't do link)

Books are really funny, bit Roald Dhalish with great illustrations and the main characher is a girl. My niece who is 9 loves them.

Thanks folks, have looked on Amazon the Andy Stanton books look perfect as do the Cosmo ones. I didn't say ealier that she has enjoyed most of the Roald Dahl books and a lot of Horrid Henry. It's a funny age, just grown out of the rainbow magic/tiarra club books, but not quite old enough for Narnia type.

Excellent . I'll tell DH he will be pleased.

I would second Gwyneth Rees. If she can cope with longer books with no pictures then I would recommend the Molly Moon books- lots of exciting adventure.

Also there is Sally Gardner's Magical Child series - The strongest girl in the world etc. She has a new one out called Lucy Willow also which would be ideal - my 7-yr-old loved it.
She also likes Linda Chapman - Secret Unicorn and Magic by Moonlight series - they are slightly better and less formulaic than the Rainbow fairy books - at least the plot progresses over the series which is something. Famous Five too.

Aah Rosa - thanks for the reminder, she recently read the strongest girl and two others invisible boy maybe? Really enjoyed them, so I'll check out the new one.

My DD loves the Home Farm Twins books, Petsitter Club, Puppy Patrol, Lucy Daniels books, Jeremy Strong, Dick King Smith, Enid Blyton, Anne Fine.....

foxinsocks · 17/06/2007 19:50

Dimanche Diller - fantastic girl adventure stories

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf - will make you laugh out loud

bookwormmum · 17/06/2007 19:56

Mallory Towers might be a bit dated for girls nowadays. I found St Clare's easier to digest myself - maybe as there were 2 girls to get to 'know' and they were scamps. Enid Blyton also wrote 'the naughtiest girl in the school' series which isn't as bad as it sounds (the girl learns about the effect of actions of others etc, not in a preachy way IMHO) and is more for your dd's age group then MT/SC I'd say.

The Varjak Paw books had my dd hooked.

What about all the Enid Blyton adventure series - the "[insert geographical feature - eg Island] of Adventure", the Famous Five, Secret Seven ... if she wants adventure that'll take her to September.

Enid · 18/06/2007 12:15

try the orchard book of greek myths

dd1 is much the same as your dd by the sound of it and she loves those. I have just bought her the secret seven (she also really enjoyed the Lemony Snicket books - i read those to her though)
