Help - which booker shortlisted book might my mum like??

She's home ill, library has all bar the winner - any recommendations? She has pretty wide tastes...

Taken her The Overstory, so hoping it's a good choice. Any recommendations gratefully received though, for when the nights draw in & I have more time to read

Everything Under by Daisy Johnson is an interesting read, sure she would enjoy it.

I’ve had a project to read them all this year and I’ve just started on the last one.
Everything Under - i quite enjoyed this. It’s beautifully written and has some amazing language. I’m a sucker for a nice metaphor! Only thing is I didn’t care about any of the characters and I found it a bit depressing.
Milkman- the winner. Hated it. Absolutely hated it. It’s very clever and all and has some memorable images, clever ideas, etc. It’s a political satire really. I don’t enjoy satire as I find it too impersonal. So it’s possibly me, not the book. I read until fifty pages before the end, almost made it then had to stop as it went up an extra level of wankiness.
The Overstory. Yeah good. Goodish. It’s an eco novel on the importance of trees. Some wonderful parts. Epic. Made me really think but ultimately it was too damn long. By the end I was sick of trees! I don’t think that was the idea.
The Long Take. A novel in poem form. Meh.
Washington Black. I’m 100 pages in and I’m quite enjoying it, but not as much as I enjoyed ‘Half Blood Blues’ by the same author. Nice characters, interesting idea for a story.
The Mars Room. My favourite. Well realised characters and interesting settings. Moved me by the end. Writer weirdly reminds me of a female, more humane Irvine Welsh, but I think that might purely be the subject matter. I wouldn’t give it to my mum though. It’s about a stripper who kills a bloke and ends up in prison. Strangely it should be depressing but I found it uplifting.

Interestingly DM has just finished The Long Take and really raved about it. (She gave up on The Overstory because of very small print - trouble with long books in paper form.)

If she's ill, don't get her a Booker Prize shortlisted book. Get her something like Old Baggage by Lissa Evans, which is really good, but also not a hard read.

The Mars Room looks good Nuffaluff - suspect it's one both me & my mum would enjoy. (She's a sarcastic & cynical 78 year old who spent much of her youth hanging out in Soho jazz clubs - sentimentality, overly small print or poor paper quality will get short shrift, but anything else probably fine.)
