So, after having my daughter 2 years ago and losing my passion for reading, I'm now fully re-absorbed in to the boom world.

I have just finished Steven King's Pet Sematary, and I have mixed feelings about the ending. I loved the cliffhanger, however I NEED to know what happened with his wife.

What are your theories regarding this? I just wish another chapter was written to ease my mind Grin

Hi. I do think she killed him. I feel like King didn't need to write that explicitly. The sematary was really bad news and no good was going to come of it.
What's yours?

I haven't read this book for ages - but I wondered. What if she came back perfectly normal and OK but just smelled and looked dead.
How does he cope? And then how does she cope?

It's more likely that she killed him though.

I also think that she killed him, however the "darling" is throwing me as when Gage returned his first words are full of hatred towards Jud.

I loved the book, but you're right, nothing good came from the Sematary and even Church the cat was changed and killed small mammals.

Then again, if she did live, where would they go and how would they explain the changes to her family and Ellie?

So many unanswered questions...

In my mind I thought her greeting sounded ominous. Yes, how would they explain that to the daughter? Grin Even in these more tolerant times, it isn't yet acceptable to out in public looking and smelling like a corpse.
It's interesting to me that you have all these unanswered questions because I just assumed that the whole family was doomed to meet early graves.

Also, perhaps Jud was getting his comeuppance for introducing Louis to the cemetery? Or maybe the cemetery was controlling Jud and forcing him to introduce people? I don't know.

I really like the ending! The 'darling' part is meant to be sinister. I think the point of the book is sometimes dead is better! (it's the theme all the way through, with Rachel's sister) It's SUCH a terrifying book and subject matter, even Stephen King himself locked this one away for years in a drawer, as he was so horrified with what he had written..

They are remaking the film, it's out next year, looking forward to that one :)

Trailer was released yesterday for the remake with the fabulous John Lithgow as Judd

Anyone watching the remake tonight?

FlyingTingTing · 06/04/2019 00:52

Watched it tonight, loved it! Man it's a creepy story.

I don't want to give away any spoilers...but...three words:

The Dumb Waiter.

FlyingTingTing · 06/04/2019 22:53

Yep!

I re-read it a few months ago and there was speculation that the length of time between death and new life might be a contributing factor to how messed up the resurrected human is.

Rachael had by far the shortest span for known humans, so it is possible that she might not have come back murderous.

But the final line is ambiguous. '"Darling" it said'. It is not clear whether the "it" is Rachael herself, or her voice, which was referred to just before that line as sounding full of dirt.
