I have no issues choosing books for my 9 year old and myself but I am struggling to know what to get for my 12 year old.
I am finding the age a bit hard to navigate with regards to stretching beyond children's books but maybe not quite ready for some of the older teen books. She has read a lot of Michael Morpurgo but I'm just really stuck, any suggestions?

Thank you so much. I'm having a good look at everything that has been suggested and will buy her a selection. Fab ideas!

Jessica Townsend’s “Nevermor: the Trials if Morrigan Crow”, got rave reviews when it came out. I enjoyed it just a bit less than some of the reviewers, but it was still an excellent read. The next book is just out and I’m looking forward to that.

Also - as usual have to recommend Susan Cooper’s Over Sea, Under Stone series.

And some of Diana Wynn’s-Jone’s lesser-known books “House of Many Ways”, which is a sequel of sorts to Howl’s Moving Castle”, “Fire and Hemlock”, “Enchanted Glass”. Also Patricia Wrede’s Edge series which starts with “Thirteenth Child”.

12 is a good age for some of the classic children’s books too. I love The Secret Garden so much and I read it for the first time as a young girl. Also Elizabeth Goudge’s The Little Ehite horse.

And if she likes horses, Elyne Mitchell’s Silver Brumby books, the Pullein-Thompson horse books, Mary O’Hara’s “My Friend Flucks” and “Thunderhead”.

And one of my favourite children’s books ever, Libby Hathorn’s “Thundereith”.

“My Friend Flicka”, for flucks sake! And Diana Wynne-Jones”. New phone, old fingers. Apologies.

'My Friend Flucks' does not sound like the name of a children's classic Grin DanceslikeEmmaGoldman

We've enjoyed The History Keepers and The Secret Breakers series.

Another recommendation for Over Sea, Under Stone and the follow-on books in The Dark is Rising.

The Murder Most Unladylike books are good for this age group.
Also Frances Hardinge: brilliantly written and dark in tone in places but no unsuitable content.

No indeed. It sounds like one of those porn names which are riffs on proper films. Grin But I swear it was an accident!
