It is coming out this week. Anyone else excited?
There is an extract in yesterday's Guardian: www.theguardian.com/books/2018/sep/15/robert-galbraith-jk-rowling-strike-extract-lethal-white?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Copy_to_clipboard

I finished it on Friday and absolutely loved it. Aside from the plot I absolutely adore the characters and I just want to read more about them, I love the complexity of the relationships and how they don't become second fiddle to the plot.

The80sweregreat · 26/09/2018 10:34

Yes, the characters are much more interesting than all the thriller things that are going on around them. they are both very likeable and real - have real emotions and thoughts and J K does seem to know a man's mind and what they are thinking and feeling, how they approach certain things or conversations are different.

Lunde · 26/09/2018 11:02

I have only watched the others on TV should I read the books first or dive straight in with this one?

Definitely read in order as the characters and information about them develops over time

Lunde · 26/09/2018 12:57

I really hope that if/when the BBC film this book that they make it a longer series to do it justice. Career of Evil was a bit ruined by them trying to squash it into 2 episodes - this book would need a 6 episode mini-series to cover all the plot twists

MrsChollySawcutt · 26/09/2018 13:28

I agree Lunde, I liked the aesthetic and the casting of the BBC series,I thought it captured the books well. But the screenplays were too rushed and missed out on the slow building character developments and relationships that are such a feature of the books.

Letshopeitsallok · 26/09/2018 22:14

I liked it better than Career of Evil. In the earlier book, I hated the chapters from the killers point of view. They were so vile about women I hated hearing them. I was glad the majority of this was not giving insight into killers point of view (until the end)

bakingdemon · 29/09/2018 20:51

She really hates both posh people and the far left, doesn't she? Feels like she set up some characters in this one just so she could make them really hateful.

The80sweregreat · 29/09/2018 22:16

J K doesn't like the super rich at all!
Her loathing comes through every book.

teddycat · 04/10/2018 20:22

Best book of the series I thought really enjoyed it.
So I googled and saw that it was on amazon and watched the first series

I can't get past the age of the Actor who plays Strike he's just too young for what I imagined and I don't think suits the smoking pint drinking roughness. He's just too young.......

Is it me getting old

Or did anyone else think he should have been an older seeming actor.

For what it's worth think I would have enjoyed it if I hadn't read the books.

The actor is roughly my age btw

It's really bothering me

teddycat · 04/10/2018 20:23

Obviously not bothering me that much but in this context

fascicle · 05/10/2018 09:02

Lunde and MrsCholly I read the other day - on the BBC Media page I think - that it will be made as a four parter. Looking forward to reading the book.

hackmum · 07/10/2018 15:37

Don’t read the review in the current Private Eye - it gives loads of the plot away.

mumdebump · 07/10/2018 23:51

Just finished it today. May need to start the whole series again from the beginning. Hope JK is well underway with book 5 as I am so overinvested in Strike & Robin. Grin

JeanPagett · 08/10/2018 18:57

Is it just me or (and I'm trying to avoid spoilers) was the reason Jasper Chiswell, the MP, was being blackmailed not just completely preposterous? The logistics alone...

I did really enjoy the book, but that was a bit of a Hmm for me.

RaggieDolls · 10/10/2018 17:09

I don't know teddy Strike is quite young. He turns 36 in the second novel.

WheelOfMisfortune · 10/10/2018 19:13

Tbh TeddyCat I thought that the casting was perfect. He is pretty young despite how he is described- and I thought that the actor was the perfect ‘attractive for some reason despite not being overtly handsome’ type. I think people forget strike is mid thirties, same age as the actor!

Loved this book, great tangled web of a plot!

teddycat · 12/10/2018 23:28

Oh I didn't realise that - just in my head then - I was probably confusing with Rebus who is a long term crush (fictional character not actor)

I do like the actor for Strike just need to reset my head image

NewYoiker · 17/10/2018 03:34

Matthew is such an abusive fuckwit isn't he?

The80sweregreat · 17/10/2018 09:57

I've never liked Matthew!
Him and Sarah deserve each other I think. Similar characters.

ShinyElena · 17/10/2018 15:07

The bad thing about this book is that a lot of the books I read recently now geeks fairly mediocre and boring compared to Lethal White. She writes so well.

I may have been cheering loudly when Robin finally made up her mind about things.

I have not finished yet. Is Raff a baddie? Is it ok to fancy him?

The80sweregreat · 17/10/2018 18:24

She is a fantastic writer , i can see the characters doing things in my own head when she writes and I do have a soft spot for Strike.
She has a very good way of knowing how people think as well and describes mannerisms very well too - In 'the Cuckoo's calling' she had one of the posh women in a restaurant and she wrote ' she handed him the bill without comment'- you really get a feel for people's characters by their actions with her prose! ( if you get my drift here)
I think she's great.

xsquared · 27/10/2018 02:19

Just finished it and really enjoyed it and hoping that the next instalment will come soon!

I was not surprised about Matthew. He really is a narcissist.

Tom Burke is perfect as Strike. He is not strikingly (see what I did there?) handsome but he has charisma and an attractive quality. Love him as Athos in The Musketeers. I first saw him in Poirot and he reminded me of Robert Pattison at the time.
