I’ve vowed to put my phone down more and pick up a book

I love the idea of relaxing with a book as the weather gets colder.
The problem is I don’t know what to read. I feel like something ‘autumnal’ if that makes any sense.
I don’t usually like the family saga type of books or war books but I like most other genres including horror, sci fi, fantasy, thrillers.
Any recommendations please?

Have you read Stephen King's Dark Tower series? More fantasy-based than the usual horror that he does.

I also need to put my phone down and pick up a book more! I'm lurking on the 50 book thread and would love to reach 50 before the end of the year.

I’ve read the first book of the dark tower series a whole back so thanks, that’s a good idea to try and pick that up.

Try ‘The Psychology of Time Travel’ by Kate Mascarenhas. Genuinely one of the best books I’ve ever read, I was actually disappointed when I’d finished because I wanted to keep reading! Bought for my holiday and finished it before the end of the first week, just couldn’t put it down.

I have recently got a kindle and I'm reading loads more. No logical reason why but I love it. Got a bunch of classics for free. Just finished Dracula. Loved it!

I really enjoyed Miss Peregrines Home for Peculair Children.
I liked to look of it and picked it up solely based on that. No idea what the story was, and it's not usually my sort of thing but I loved it!

What do you like reading?

I personally love to read mysteries and ghost stories. I have a set of Nancy Drew books and some Agatha Christie ones too. As a child I read a lot.

My favourite school stories were Malory Towers and the Chalet School series. I have a few tucked away somewhere in the flat. Someone gave me the LHOTP books one Christmas time too. I’m somewhat of a picky reader.

Easy to dip in and out of instead of picking up your phone for 10 minutes

I'm the same I love reading but haven't really had much time the last few years. I'm on mat leave now so I'm flying through books Grin

If you like fantasy I'd recommend Terry Goodkind the sword of truth (I've read them all and thoroughly enjoyed all of them).

Or Robert Jordan wheel of time. Ive just finished book 4. So excited to start 5th

Robin Hobb if you like fantasy, neil gamain if you don't mind a touch of horror in your fantasy. Mary Stewart's Merlin/Arthur books are some of my very favourites - the crystal cave, hollow hills etc. I also love her romance/thrillers too, and am a huge georgette heyer fan too - pure escapism but fun

As Best said, Please do come and join (or even watch and lurk on) the 50 books thread. It's so inspiring, and don't be intimidated by other people's figures. The first year I joined I fell of the thread because I felt I wasn't reading enough. The second year I surprised myself by managing 40. This year I've read something like 39 already . It's not about the numbers, but people sharing, debating and loving their reading really compels you to read more.

In the meantime Reservoir 13 and The Essex Serpent are both my idea of Autumnal books. Or Conclave is a great, pacey thriller that you'll race through, and far more gripping than I can make it sound in any review.

Thanks for the invite to the 50 books thread. I’d be ecstatic if I could read 5 from now til the end of the year!
I’ll lurk on there for ideas for now and I’ll join next year Smile

84 Charing Cross Road is a really lovely book and perfect for cosying up with in Autumn.

I’ve just finished reading ‘Daisy’s vintage Cornish camper van’ by Ali McNamara. It’s one of those sad but nice stories that leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside without being too OTT

My advise would be join your local library. That way you won't feel guilty returning ones that you don't like. They do ebook as well.
I also go to the recommended shelf to try out new books I might not try!
Also when I get into a 'slump' I pick up one of my shorter books!

The long way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers is my favourite recent read. Classed as sci-fi but is all about cultures/beliefs & how we relate to each other. Was a great fun read.

The Margaret Atwood Oryx and Crake trilogy are brilliant! Futuristic but scarily could be real, great dynamics drawn with current day x enjoy!!!
