All the recommendations seem to be chick lit which I don't like! I'm literally frozen by the choice! What have you read and can recommend?

What genres do you like? Are you looking for free/cheap books or paid for.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 05/09/2018 18:41

i enjoyed the executioners daughter, by jane hardstaff

DolorestheNewt · 05/09/2018 18:43

Narrow it down a bit, Milady!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/09/2018 18:44

If you choose 'Kindle books' from the department near the top of the page there are a few headings to choose from. If you click on 'best sellers' then it'll take you to the top 100, you can choose top 100 paid or top 100 unpaid and have a look through. You can further refine it by genre on the left, so that you can get the top 100 sci-fi books for instance.

Just read 'the widow' which was good
But the best was 'the Brighton mermaid'

Highly recommend that one!

Ylvamoon · 05/09/2018 18:48

Depends what you like. I you just want to browse go to Bookstore and browse "categories" you can select by review or price (be aware of the free & cheap tat) and add interesting titles to your wish list... you can later filter this list for a really good read!!! Grin

Just finished a book Sweet little lies by Caz Frear really enjoyed it think it’s £1 on kindle unfortunately I brought it from WHSmiths so paid a fortune definitely recommend.

BifsWif · 05/09/2018 18:51

The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns are both fantastic.

AdaColeman · 05/09/2018 18:52

Sign up for the Kindle Daily Deal email, usually three books at 99 pence each, I've had some interesting stuff from that.

Miladymilord · 05/09/2018 18:58

I know sorry not helpful! Not the free stuff, not the thrillers. I like memoirs. A thousand splendid suns is a good shout but I think I may have read it years ago

If you liked The Kite Runner try these:

  • The Girl in the Letter by Emily Gunn
-The Unbroken Line of the Moon by Johanna Hildebrand
  • Elephant Moon by John Sweeney
DolorestheNewt · 05/09/2018 19:25

Ooh, my NDN recommended this yesterday. He really was enthusiastic about it.

Thanks Ylvamoon

If you've got Kindle unlimited and like thrillers and don't mind a bit of gore, I really enjoyed Harm (book one of what's currently a trilogy) by Hugh Fraser. One of the better series on Unlimited I found.

whereiscaroline · 05/09/2018 20:33

Ooh just seen not thrillers, ignore my suggestion Grin

SilverHairedCat · 05/09/2018 20:57

I found Kindle Unlimited to be a waste of my time.... Lots of tripe and little of any quality, sadly.

I read lots of classics that are out of copyright and are therefore free. Every now and again I go nuts and spend a fortune on a series of books, but I do mix and match between war histories and teenage post-apocalypse stories (Maze Runner etc).

I'm so sad that only one Tom Clancy book is on the Amazon library (in English. Lots of German options!) - it's all down to the publishers and what they allow on there. It's a PITA sometimes.

Miladymilord · 06/09/2018 08:46

I agree kindle unlimited is terrible. I have a free trial but will cancel it next week.

Elephant Moon was on KU and I read some of it last night. The story sounded great and lots of good reviews but the writing is pretty awful. Grammatical errors plus very unbelievable dialogue. Glad I didn't pay for it.

I do like things to be well written!

Dolores that sounds great

Look in the monthly and daily deals. Plenty of 'proper' books on short term deals, rather than self published dross that's always free or cheap. I think you can filter the monthly deals by category if you want to see a favourite genre.

ElleMcFearsome · 08/09/2018 13:40

Sign up to the 99p daily deals email! Proper books with big discount. It's filling up my kindle nicely Grin

elkiedee · 08/09/2018 19:38

I haven't read most of these and have marked ones I read and liked very much with an asterisk, but am looking at some of the offer available for someone looking for literary fiction and better quality non-fiction including memoirs - have left out chicklit, romance, crime, most historical fiction (there are a few which are a bit more literary) and young adult books

Today's daily deals offered until midnight include:

David Olusoga's Black and British: A Forgotten History 99p

Monthly deals (not crime/thrillers/chicklit/romance) include:

Non fiction

Oliver Sacks, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat 99p
Lucy Worsley, Jane Austen at Home 99p
Laurie Lee, Cider with Rosie £1.99
Susannah Callahan, My Month of Madness £1.99

Novels:

John Irving, The Cider House Rules £1.99

  • Mary Wesley, The Camomile Lawn £1.99 Graham Greene, The End of the Affair £1.99 John Fowles, The Magus £1.99 Elif Shafak, Forty Rules of Love 99p Helen Dunmore, Exposure £1.99
  • Jo Baker, Longbourn 99p
  • Hannah Kent, The Good People 99p
  • Salley Vickers, The Cleaner of Chartres £1.99 Louis de Bernieres, Birds Without Wings £1.99 Roddy Doyle, Smile £1.99
  • Claire Fuller, Our Endless Numbered Days £1.99 Lawrence Osborne, Forgiven £1.99
  • Polly Clark, Larchfield 99p

Also books by Yannis Varoufakis, Alistair Campbell

I recently read Jessica Shattuck, The Women of the Castle. about 3 women in post WWII Nazi Germany and note that it's currently on offer for £1.90 - it has been for a while

If you look at the Kindle Daily Deals page there are also links to Monthly Deals - this seems to always include some more expensive books but most are under £2.
