List your faves here please. Would also appreciate info on why you like it, and age it's suitable for. Links good too!

The Harry Potter series, my two (7 and 10 ) love them. And so do dh and I. Stephen Fry reads them so well. And they are nice and long , so perfect for long holiday trips.

We also listened to Guards , guards by Terry Pratchett this last holiday. Good for Dh, me and dd, not so good for the 7 year old ds, but he did enjoy some of it.

Audible.co.uk is a fantastic place to get good audio books btw, much cheaper than the book stores

Just William is great. Also Alice in Wonderland, A Little Princess and Famous Five.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2007 18:50

Roald Dahl set about £19 from the book people. Bargain.

My two aged 2 and 5 really liked Charlie and Lola.

Checkout Storynory on i-tunes store under podcasts, it's free and my dd's love the stories. DD1 got dh's old ipod, but before that we put them on her mp3 player.

horrid henry (from say 5 years) - great fun!
wizzard of oz - all ages - great classic and very much better than the film
narnia - (from 5?) exciting
the northern lights - (older, maybe 9 or so?) - all the 3 kids loved this, good story telling
anything read by tony robinson especially 'i'm telling oyu they're aliens' and 'mad cow' - just good fun and well read
we use story tapes all the time, really love them
also for adults try the alan bennett head to head stories, really lovely and read by the author.

familygirl · 07/06/2007 18:54

ds (4) listens to Winnie the Pooh read by Alan Bennett over and over and over and over and over and over again...He's also quite partial to Postman Pat. But Pooh is the winner by an absolute mile.

Earlybird · 08/06/2007 11:37

Thanks to all for good advice. Will follow up.

slayerette - that Winnie the Pooh sounds good. Any idea how it compares to the Stephen Fry/Judi Dench version mentioned in the Times yesterday?

second hte roald dahl set

dd (4) is loving my naughty little sister.

slayerette · 08/06/2007 13:31

I haven't heard the Fry/Dench one although I would think they'd be great. The Bennett one was the only one we saw - it's abridged but not too clumsily and Bennett has a lovely voice for story telling (although his Kanga and Roo are a little strange!)

Our local library has a really good section of audio tapes for children with new ones coming in regularly. DS doesn't read novels very often but he has loves listening to tapes.
