Crimson Petal and the White - anything similar?

LOVED this book and thinking that Victorian fiction might be a new passion for me. Anyone got suggestions for similar novels, perhaps Victorian crime although not necessarily Jack the Ripper themed....
TIA

Have you read Fingersmith and some of the other Sarah Waters ones?

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/09/2018 22:31

Crime-wise, the Anne Perry books are good for atmosphere and detail, with strong characters.

AnduinsGirl · 02/09/2018 22:32

Thanks both - I have not read Fingersmith or Ann Perry off to Google

Patrick Suskind - Perfume

You might like Michel Faber's book of short stories " The Apple". There is a follow on story from Crimson Petal.

The Observations by Jane Harris

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/09/2018 23:07

Yes to Fingersmith.

Dottierichardson · 02/09/2018 23:28

I enjoyed Fingersmith (as well as the film version The Handmaiden) but preferred Waters's Tipping the Velvet, you could also try J.G. Farrell's The Siege of Krishnapur, Philip Hensher's The Mulberry Empire, Margaret Attwood's Alias Grace or Peter Ackroyd's Hawksmoor. There's one other I thought of that would fit, but need to check the title.

Dottierichardson · 02/09/2018 23:33

Remembered it was Jennifer Donnelly's A Gathering LIght murder mystery set in the early 1900s, originally marketed to young adults but actually a great read at any age.

I loved The Crimson Petal and the White too, will follow the recommendations on here.

An original sensation novel: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Audley%27s_Secret

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell
Fingersmith, as mentioned
The Quincunx

I'll think of more

highlandcoo · 03/09/2018 14:37

YY to Fingersmith and The Observations (one of my absolute favourite books)

You could also try Beloved Poison by E S Thompson, the first in the Jem Flockhart series of Victorian medical mysteries. Very atmospheric and involving. I discovered this author only recently at the Edinburgh book festival and looking forward to reading more of her books.

MinaPaws · 03/09/2018 14:40

Try Essie Fox's novels The Somnabulist and Elijah's Mermaid. Both very ornate Victorian settings and stories.

I loved the "Crimson Petal and the White" and would also second "The Quincunx", it's even longer than the former but a great read. Another cracking Victorian based novel riddled with murder, deceit, love and revenge "The Meaning of Night"by Michael Cox, I think I would deem that the closest to Crimson Petal. Another worth a mention Gillespie and I by Jane Harris.

Dottierichardson · 04/09/2018 00:06

DonnaHaywood second Lady Audley's Secret, from a similar period East Lynne is also excellent, very melodramatic.

Shamelessly place marking so I can find this thread again when the Gin clears from my head Smile

Toomuchsplother · 08/09/2018 12:18

Gillespie and I By Jane Harris, anything by Sarah Waters.

Terpsichore · 08/09/2018 14:06

OP if you haven't read Wilkie Collins's The Woman In White and The Moonstone, you're in for a treat (both real Victorian novels and cracking reads).
