My sister is turning 16 next month and after years of trying to get her into reading it seems she has finally succumbed! She has just read and loved the little beach street bakery after I recommended Jenny Colgan ( I enjoyed some of her books when I was younger but seem to have outgrown them now I'm in my 30s......) I've told her to get the others in the series but I really want to get her something she will love for her birthday. Something a little bit special. Any ideas?

If your sister has only just begun reading books for enjoyment then you don’t want to put her off by something too heavy. I have a sister of a similar age and I know some of the suggestions would have put her off.

Some of the books I (and my sister) have enjoyed are:

Harry Potter books
Twilight series
Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella
Billy & Me series by Giovanni Fletcher
To kill a mocking bird
The Book Thief
Third Pig Detective Agency - this was a surprisingly good story that I thoroughly enjoyed, with humour throughout.
My Sister’s Keeper
Olivia Joules and the overactive imagination.

Good Luck, hope you find something!

The Fault in Our Stars is a good suggestion. Absolutely fucking devastating though. I haven't been particularly taken with any of his other books though, although I haven't read his newest.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman are just amazing. I'm not familiar with what you said she's already read so they might be a bit heavy for her for now, but perhaps one for the future. I'd say it took a few chapters for me to get into it as well.

Harry Potter is obviously excellent. Can be tricky to persuade people to read it when they've already for preconceptions from the films though - took me years to convince my sister to read them, but now she is a girl obsessed.

The Divergent Series would be my other suggestion. Amazing, powerful story but I think probably a bit easier to read than some other YA fantasy.

Books by Malorie Blackman
Everything Everything and The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. She may have seen the film of Everything Everything though.

Percy Jackson..my 14 year old niece loved it and she's a reluctant reader.

Anything by Holly Bourne, she's a British YA writter, great for young feminists. www.goodreads.com/author/list/6561227.Holly_Bourne
More of Me by Katherine Evans www.goodreads.com/book/show/27270184-more-of-me
Slated trilogy by Teri Terry www.goodreads.com/book/show/12743472-slated Absorbing but not too challenging reads, great for someone who's just discovered reading
