Book suggestion to cheer someone up

Hi all, I'm hoping for some help! A friend of mine has recently gone through a nasty break up and I'm putting together a little care package to cheer her up. I'm after some book suggestions to include, does anyone have any ideas? Something feel good/funny etc

How about Nora Ephron's Heartburn. It's about a woman going through a divorce, based on Ephron's own life, but is one of the funniest books I've ever read.

The Chronicles of St Mary’s by Jodi Taylor .
Lovely light books with good humour and history.

Or anything by Bill Bryson .

Dottierichardson · 26/08/2018 05:16

I second Heartburn brilliant book and the female character emerges triumphant, so definitely upbeat and suited to the situation.

CramptonHodnet · 26/08/2018 09:03

Bill Bryson, definitely. I like Devid Sedaris - his books are so funny.

Agree Nora Ephron can be really good, but I didnt enjoy Heartburn as much as I Feel Bad About My Neck.

Janet Evanovich's lightweight Stephanie Plum crime thriller series beginning with One For The Money. They have loads of humour, and always cheer me up.

Dottierichardson · 26/08/2018 14:49

CramptonHodnet second your suggestions, I like Stephanie Plum if only because she's the only heroine I've come across who lives with a hamster.

Also find PG Wodehouse cheering, could try Mapp and Lucia or I Capture the Castle.

Trumpton beat me to it with the Chronicles of St Mary's suggestion. Laugh out loud in places.

(Although there is angst, and one of two of the later books in the series are darker in tone.)

Trumpton · 26/08/2018 18:27

MissLingoss I believe your first name is Connie , according to Peterson ! Snurk ! Just read the steam pump short story .

Another vote for Heartburn.

Coming home by Rosamund Pilcher

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, published by Persephone Books - a lovely feelgood 1920s fairytale about a dowdy governess who is accidentally sent to the home of a glamorous nightclub singer, and ends up having her fortunes turned around. It's a beautiful beautiful object like all their books, with sweet illustrations too: perfect cheerer-upper.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 02/09/2018 19:56

Ooo, having just picked Heartburn up in a charity sale for a pound I'm glad to see these recommendations!

Missingstreetlife · 02/09/2018 20:00

Anything by Marian Keyes or Alexander mcall smith, ladies detective agency

2morrowiscancelled · 02/09/2018 20:01

I third Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. I'd stay away from anything with too much romance too.

Also, What a lovely thing to do!

MipMipMip · 02/09/2018 20:04

Number one ladies detective agency, st Mary's (One damned thing after another is the first).

Basically people have beaten me to them.

MipMipMip · 02/09/2018 20:05

Good omens by Pratchett and Gaiman.

stayathomer · 05/09/2018 23:01

Tracie Bloom (not her latest one which is a weepie!) Keris Stainton, The Cornish Village School by Kitty Wilson and My sisters and me by Lisa Dickenson

MrsEricBana · 05/09/2018 23:08

Yes Heartburn is brilliant, relatable for her and may empower her. I read it on holiday, couldn't put it down and so just before sunset I sneaked down to the beach to quickly finish it. I read the last word just as the sun went down and my tablet battery died. Perfect. Nora would have loved that. I then read three more of her books. She's fab. I thought Eleanor Oliphant was uplifting too.
