She is 5.5 & this is her favourite book by far! Her very first Roald Dahl book

She got it at her school book fair last Friday & has had 2 or 3 chapters a night & through the day today. We're almost finished!

I sorta find it hard to read what with the way the giant talks etc & have to try & stop myself from reading them the way he should say them, not the way they are written

So.. what other Roald Dahl/other books have your children got that they love?

Have to say she's not really into frilly/girly books. She has gruffalo etc... most of those little princess ones, she's teaching herself words from those but they are really ds's

Any recommendations?

My DD loves Fantastic Mr Fox and the Magic Finger (both read twice). Oh and the Twits.

Heidi could be good too.

The Enchanted Wood and the Magic Faraway Tree- Enid Blyton.

'Animal Ark' books

I've got loads of my own books from when I was little and we're working our way through those.

She really loves old fashioned fairy tales too, like Hansel & Gretal and The Princess and the Pea.

I loved Roald Dahl books as a kids, especially the twits

fireflyfairy2 · 28/05/2007 22:23

The Twits! That can be the next one then!

We have Milly Molly Mandy & another I can't think of the name of. A Clarice Bean one which I refuse to read as it's a bit odd IMHO

She has loads, but I am thinking most of them are too young for her now as she wants the chapter kinds.

Charlottes web also, she loves that.

Oh no - not the Animal Ark ones - they are awful to read aloud. Brilliant when they are reading alone though!
Mine found The Witches too scary. Matilda is fab but she might be a little young. James and the Giant Peach is probably our favourite, although we like Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator too.
We love a book called The Pufin Book of 5 minute Tales, and also Stories for 6 year Olds.

when we had done all the roald dahl ones we read some dick king smith ones and they went down really well. you can't really go wrong with roald dahl - a flick through will tell you the age range (some have larger print and pictures)

I love it when they get into chapter books. We are now doing harry potter and it is lots of fun.

As you have a dd then Matilda is a good option, my dts have said if they ever have a sister the poor child is to be named Matilda after her. Magical powers optional.

But I have always loved Fantastic Mr. Fox. The description of the baddies at the beginning, with one so dirty he has dead flies in his ear. Name me a child who doesn't scream with glee at the thought.

There is also quite a good message about destroying the countryside and wildlife which I don't know if it is meant but it meant a lot to me when I was little.

forgot about The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me.

lillochum · 28/05/2007 22:34

"Flat Stanley" springs to mind! (Kinda sounds weird put like that doesn't it!) Might think of some more in a minute.

katelyle · 28/05/2007 22:41

Oh, I forgot Dick King Smith - my dd loved the Sophie books so much she wrote him a letter and got a lovely reply. I LOVE Sophie!

katelyle · 28/05/2007 22:42

fireflyfairy2 · 28/05/2007 22:46

Yes!!
It's the Sophie one we have! I knew I recognised the name of the author!

She goes to school, she wants to buy a farm! Oh yes dd loves her & her brothers!!

Matilda, The Twits, oh great, lots of choices now!

Though I hate the thought of getting rid of her other books She has too many but no room in her room, 4 bookshelves full & she only ever reads the same ones over & over again.

Is dr Zuess The Cat In The Hat?

If so then dd is scared of it

She saw the film @ Xmas last year & was petrified of it. And the grinch, she is still scared of it...... such a softie

Though some other Dr Zuess books might be right up her street!

I remember my first ever book,[well, one of my own, that was bought especially for me!] it was Enid Blyton famous five, I was bought it by a teacher at school in p6.
