Pls recommend me a book for my holiday next week

I am not an avid reader. I start books, can't get into them and then abandon it. I am going on holiday next week and I will be forced to sit down and relax.

I have read a few books recently which I couldn't put down and read over a week. These included:

The Girl on the Train
Life of Bees
The Handmaids Tale

Not sure if there is a pattern or genre there.

Any ideas. I am going to be a bit stuffed if I have nothing to do in my remote cottage.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Such compulsive reading, a bit Liane Moriarty, a bit Anne Tyler......

namechangedforthisone1 · 13/07/2018 22:48

Mil started me on it today

A child called it! Very disturbing but can't put it down.

Clawdy · 13/07/2018 22:51

Hated that book, not exactly holiday reading! A lot of doubt now about how much of it's true, as well.

northernlites · 13/07/2018 22:58

Olivia oliphant is completely fine, a great read

Idbemonica1 · 13/07/2018 23:03

The trouble with goats and sheep and the Rivers of london series?

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine is marvellous! As is The Cows.... both easy reading but gripping!

ScreamingValenta · 13/07/2018 23:09

I've just finished reading The Houdini Girl by Martyn Bedford, and really enjoyed it. I saw when looking for other books by the same author that Kindle describes it as an 'erotic classic' but it's not what I'd call an erotic novel - it's a well-written murder mystery.

ScreamingValenta · 13/07/2018 23:19

Also recently enjoyed House Rules by Jodie Picoult and Engleby by Sebastian Faulks - both murder novels with more to them than the glut of psychological thrillers around at the moment.

My recommendation for holiday reading is to visit your local charity shops and pick up a pile of books that look interesting - if some turn out to be duds you can abandon them and move on to the next book. After your holiday, just re-donate those you don't want to keep.

I read 'A Child Called It' years ago when it was first published, and like a PP, wouldn't recommend it for holiday reading. Some of the scenes described still make me shudder to this day.

Why Mummy drinks

MrsJamesFraser · 13/07/2018 23:31

How not to be a boy by Robert Webb is utterly brilliant. Not your current style but I promise you will love it

Bojangles33 · 13/07/2018 23:31

The Marriage Pact and The Time Travellers Wife

SyrilSneer · 13/07/2018 23:32

Things I’ve enjoyed recently that would be good holidays reads -
Little Fires Everywhere
Sympathy by Olivia Sudjic
The Regulars Georgia Clark
Manhattan Beach Jennifer Egan

ScreamingValenta · 13/07/2018 23:35

Another vote for The Time Traveller's wife.

I'm taking notes from this thread as I am a book-addict cursed with being a fast reader so need a regular supply of books - MN recommendations rarely disappoint!

Graphista · 13/07/2018 23:38

Rachel's holiday - Marian Keyes

Serious subject matter but with genuine laugh out loud bits too.

Before I go to sleep - if you like psychological thrillers.

Agatha Christie is always good for "light" thrillers. Death on the Nile - holiday setting.

Sue grafton - again light mysteries, which if you were around in the 80's are nostalgic too.

P3onyPenny · 14/07/2018 07:39

You might like The Woman in the Window ( bit like Girl on the Train). I'm taking Tangerine which is supposed to be good.

FairyAnn · 14/07/2018 07:42

The 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared

Brilliant book! Grin

Eleanor Oliphant and Before I go to Sleep

wasthataburp · 14/07/2018 07:47

A child called it is amazing but you will read it in about 2 hours so need to get the sequels as well

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/07/2018 08:47

Another vote for Eleanor Oliphant and Why Mummy Drinks.

If you liked the Handmaids Tale, have you read The Girl with all the Gifts?

TypicallyNorthern · 14/07/2018 08:53

You people are superstars. Thanks so much X

Have you tried What's Left Unsaid by Deborah Stone? I couldn't put it down. Or I really like Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

GeorgeIII · 10/08/2018 19:56

The couple next door is a page turner, good for hooks.
