If I like books by Scarlett Thomas, David Mitchell, Robin Sloan, Kate Atkinson and Jasper Fforde who else might I like? Thanks.

Michel Faber, John Boyne, Maggie o'Farrell all spring to mind.

You might like Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London.

I'm currently reading John Boyne's The Heart's Invisible Furies, which is superb.

William Boyd's novels Sweet Caress and Any Human Heart are both long very enjoyable reads. I think they would appeal to you if you've enjoyed Kate Atkinson's novels.

Perhaps also The Cazalet series by Elizabeth Jane Howard.

Cherrypi · 09/06/2018 14:47

Thanks. I like Aaronovitch, Faber and Boyd. Not tried Farrell yet or Boyne’s adult work. Will put them on the list. Not sure about Howard and generally prefer things at least partially set in the modern world.

I'm assuming you've read some Discworld? Jasper Fforde and Ben Aaronovitch are very popular with Discworld fans.
Or how about Neverwhere or The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaimin?

If you like Thomas's later work then try Haruki Murukami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle , which is a great novel. Also you might try David Peace's Tokyo books, he and Mitchell seem to be pals and there's an affinity there. Also NOT modern but possibly an influence on Thomas, Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita. You also might like China Mieville.

Cherrypi · 10/06/2018 07:24

Spot on recommendations. Love the Pratchetts featuring death and Murakami. Like Mieville and may reattempt Gaiman and The master and margarita. Will look up Pearce. Thanks.

Cherrypi sounds as if we didn't think of anything new for you though! I've never been able to get on with Gaiman either, OH loves him. Will see if I can think of anything else when the coffee finally kicks in!

Dottierichardson · 10/06/2018 08:48

OP amazing what coffee can do. What about Karen Russell wrote Swamplandia , Kelly Link or Lydia Millet? Not sure what Millet's latest novel is like but liked the trilogy that started with How the Dead Dream. Also The Raw Shark Texts can't remember author off-hand.

Cherrypi · 10/06/2018 09:23

Ooh heard of swamplandia but the other two are completely new to me. The title of the trilogy is intriguing. Thanks.

Cherry the Millet is a love/hate trilogy, it starts out quite straightforwardly but a little off-kilter and then things get stranger as the trilogy continues. The best Kelly Link to try out is Magic for Beginners, also you could try Rivka Galchen's American Innovations very absurdist short stories. Stuck in waiting for a parcel so you gave me something to think about, hope you find something you like. Scarlett Thomas is pretty unique I think so a hard act to follow.

Dottierichardson · 11/06/2018 15:42

Cherrypi forgot to mention the Bryant and May series by Christopher Fowler, Bryant and May are detectives from the Peculiar Crime Unit, they solve 'peculiar' crimes! A little bit noirish/sometimes amusing/a little bit post-modern. Possible they might appeal to a Jasper Fforde fan, they're a little more magic/supernatural but not too much towards fantasy. They're really well-written as well.

Cherrypi · 11/06/2018 18:31

Ooh yes I read the first one and enjoyed it. You’ve reminded me to track down the second. Thanks for your other recommendations too.

Depends on what you like...but if you like paranormal mysteries try Elizabeth Andrews, The Psychic Sisters series, she has just released the third The Haunting of Stoke Water. All three are scary, not too much, funny and have good plot twists.
