Mine has to be Kate Atkinson. I've just started Case Histories. Have read a few others of hers. Her writing is just incredible.
I also really like Maggie O Farrell
The hand that first held mine is her best book. Sarah Waters is fab too. Sorry I was greedy and picked 3!

I’ve only discovered Anne Tyler and Kate Atkinson in the last couple of years. I’m rationing myself as I love the books so much.

All three Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novels were excellent. I also love Lionel Shriver, Emma Donoghue, Alice Hoffman, Anne Tyler, Ann Patchett, Rhidian Brook, Donal Ryan, Carol Shields, Willy Vlautin, Denis Lehane and John Connolly.

I just finished Anne Tyler's ladder of years where that is basically what the lead character does!

Ladder of Years is one of my favorite books of all time.

Gail Godwin is another of my favorite contemporary American writers.

From the mystery genre, PD James and Ruth Rendell are unparalleled.

SenecaFalls · 08/06/2018 02:16

And Ian Rankin. I do love a bit of Tartan Noir.

babybythesea · 09/06/2018 08:49

I love Kate Morton. Especially The Forgotten Garden.
Bill Bryson. I like knowing things and he makes it easy to read.
Dickens has been mentioned but I also love Austen.
And am working my way through the Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard and have bought another set of hers from The Book People, really enjoy her style.

The mighty Sara Maitland.

BonnieF · 16/06/2018 22:47

George Orwell.

I also enjoy Robert Harris’s meticulously researched historical thrillers. They’re a handy way for the non-historian to learn about important stuff without having to actually read history books....

ProudThrilledHappy · 16/06/2018 22:50

I have been enjoying Ali Smith lately, very understated and easy to read writing. The stories feel so huma.

I don't think I've ever read a Stephen King, but will aim to change that soon!

Hygge · 03/07/2018 20:12

@PerspicaciaTick - Sarah Maitland's Home Truths is one of my favourites. It's a regular reread of mine.
