strong motion - jonathan franzen
Better than the corrections - really oddly powerful

Swizzler · 20/05/2007 11:56

Anything by AS Byatt or Margaret Attwood
Recently loved In Trouble Again by Redmond O'Hanlon but perhaps a bit travelly?
Jonathan Coe's The Rotters Club supposed to be excellent

CODalmighty · 20/05/2007 11:57

Anne Tyler - sets virtually all her books in Baltimore - don't know about any pilots' wives!
IMO Joyce Carol Oates is ghastly - but that's only based on having to read The Falls for reading group.
Restless by William Boyd is good

Swizzler · 20/05/2007 11:57

I have it but haven't read it

William Boyd The New Confessions one of the best modern novels I've read. Most of his stuff is good.

Just finished reading Small Island, Andrea Levy. That was pretty good.

Sarah Waters stuff - or is that not modern enough?

What about The Time Travellers Wife, Audrey Niffenegger? That surprised me.

Taylormama · 20/05/2007 11:59

the lovely bones is a hard read
nothing like time traveller's wife

bakedpotato · 20/05/2007 11:59

The Emperor's Children, Claire Messud, is fantastic
The Last Curtsey by Fiona Macarthy, about the final Season, should be in p/back by now

CODalmighty · 20/05/2007 11:59

liekd smal island a LOT

Gryff Rhys Jones - interesting but doesn't show him in a good light - but the ex-girlfried he has for years and dumps is still apparently a friend, so perhaps he isn't so bad.

GColdtimer · 20/05/2007 11:59

Ah, I see, don't like time travelles shitty wife! Lovely bones isn't like that but it is told from a dead person's point of view!

CODalmighty · 20/05/2007 11:59

If you like Boyd what about Evelyn Waugh (tho not that modern). Brideshead his best but other stuff like Decline and Fall sharp and funny (tho cruel)

CODalmighty · 20/05/2007 12:00
