On our way north for the week and some long evenings getting children to sleep in the caravan await.

I've read and loved Outlander. Tried lymond but can't get into it. Love a historical novel or a saga but not keen on thrillers.

Please recommend me something!

Historical novels around Scotland....

To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolfe (Skye)

Gillespie and I, Jane Harris (Glasgow)

Secrets of the Sea House, Elizabeth Gifford (Harris)

Highland Storms, Christina Courtenay (Rosyth)

Island of Wings, Karin Altenberg (St Kilda)

Hope you find something you like....

Not historical but loved the Shetand series by Anne Cleeves.

Turn of the Tide, and the sequel A House Divided by Margaret Skea. Set during the 16thC in Ayrshire - local writer but absolutely brilliant books - don’t be put off by the fact the author isn’t a big name. She has won a ton of awards and the books are brilliant.

Witch Light is brilliant

Any books by liiian beckwith. Written in the 50's andcare hilarious. Start with hill is lonely.

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2018 08:14

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie . Also very short which is good!

OllyBJolly · 28/05/2018 08:48

I found His Bloody Project absolutely riveting. Just the thing for caravan reading!

CoolCarrie · 30/05/2018 16:18

Definitely Lillian Beckwith, her books are so funny, She goes to the Isle of Eigg, although she changes the name in the books, and rents a croft there. She also wrote a book called About My Father’s Business about her younger life in her father’s shop.

Kingdom of Shadows by Barbara Erskine -

ChristmasFluff · 30/05/2018 17:01

Mary Queen of Scotland and The Isles by Margaret George.

Lessstressedhemum · 31/05/2018 10:08

Janet Paisley writes brilliant books.

SoddingUnicorns · 31/05/2018 10:10

Peter May’s trilogy set on Lewis are great.

Also, Quintin Jardine’s Skinner series (there are 26 I think now) set in Edinburgh and across Scotland.

Both cop books but not thrillers.

What about Irvine Welsh?

LeaningtotheJackofHearts · 02/06/2018 21:48

I second His Bloody Project. Also the Crow Road if you've not read it, and Stonemouth.

anonymice · 12/06/2018 10:04

The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justifed Sinner by James Hogg.

Taytotots · 13/06/2018 01:55

The Crow Road Iain Banks as jackof hearts says. A great family story if not quite a saga.

I like the Isabel Dalhousie series by Alexander McCall Smith too if you fancy something lightish.

isthissummer · 13/06/2018 02:09

Eleanor Oilphant is completely fine

Stopyourhavering64 · 13/06/2018 02:21

I love Flight of the Heron by DK Broster - romantic adventure story set during the '45 Jacobite uprising. The action takes place all over Scotland, so may well tie in to places you're visiting.

AL Kennedy, particularly Night Geometry and the Garscadden Trains

George Mackay Brown

IndigoApple · 15/06/2018 21:06

The Outrun by Amy Liptrot

Several Maggie O'Farrell books are set in Edinburgh

Weepingwillows12 · 15/06/2018 21:34

If you like historical fiction try nigel tranter. He has written dozens of books about Scottish history. They are pretty easy reading and all follow a set formula.
