Love reading & escaping in a book, but don't get much chance to read nowadays (have a dd with SN) but dh & I are off on our first kids free holiday in July & I want to take 2 books - a thriller type & an uplifting one (not chick lit!)

I'm a huge Stephen King fan & have read most of his,but not Revival,so was thinking of taking that, until I read some posts on here about it & a lot of the SK fans didn't like it.
I have quite a few unread thrillers on my shelves -
Cell - Stephen King,
The Twenty three - Linwood Barclay,
BirdBox - Josh Malerman
The last days of Jack Sparks - Jason Arnopp
The waiting room - F.G Cottam.
So was thinking of taking one of those.Which one would you recommend?
Would love your recommendations for uplifting books too. What did you think of -
The keeper of lost things,Eleanor Oliphant,How to be happy?
Would love some recommendations please Smile

There is a short story book just out called Florida.

Toomanytealights · 14/05/2018 18:16

I liked A Man Called Ove but not sure if it's holiday reading iykwim.

There is a thriller just out called Tangerine which I'm thinking of taking.

It's very dated now but High Stakes by Dick Francis is a very bonebrained light thriller I always enjoy, partly set in Florida.

I recently read Anything is Possible by Elizabeth Strout. I think she's an amazing writer. It's a sequel to My name is Lucy Barton which I haven't read but it didn't matter. It was mildly dark though.

I really enjoyed then she was gone by Lisa Jewell. I was itching for one of those page turning thrillers at the time.

Have you read Doctor Sleep? Just finished it and loved it.

I agree with a man called ove, made me laugh and cry. Lovely book. Eleanor Oliphant also great.

chickensaresafehere · 14/05/2018 19:37

Toomany Florida looks interesting. I do enjoy a good short story book.
Caringiscreepy I've got Doctor Sleep yet to read but it's a hardback copy,so a bit bulky to pack for my holidays. Looking forward to reading it though.

Summertime by Vanessa LaFaye is set in the Keys and is a fantastic and very atmospheric book. Her latest one At First Light is also set in the Keys and I enjoyed it, but not as much as Summertime.

I think what I’m about to post will be totally useless but just in case ... !

When we were in Florida a few years ago I bought a couple of books which I really enjoyed. They were set in Florida, and were murder mystery type things - but funny. Sort of the Floridian version of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum. But unfortunately, I can’t remember what they were called or who they were by (am vaguely thinking the author was male)!

If by some chance anyone knows, I think you might enjoy them as holiday reading!

Toomanytealights · 15/05/2018 16:20

Were you thinking of the Carl Hiassen books?

Helmetbymidnight · 15/05/2018 18:06

Eleanor gets my vote!

Or where’d you go Bernadette.

OllyBJolly · 17/05/2018 22:33

I use the tripfiction.com website for location based holiday reads. Spent tonight stocking up the kindle with books set in Greece.

Have a fabulous holiday!

chickensaresafehere · 19/05/2018 08:29

I have ordered Summertime,The girl with all the gifts,A man called Ove & The 100 year old man.
Thanks for all the recommendations.
Only tripfiction.com was brilliant.

If you get on well with A Man Called Ove, the authors other two books are good as well. You have to read my grandmother sends her regards and apologises first before Britt Marie was ere as Britt Marie is a character in the first one who gets her own spin off 👍

I would recommend The Keeper of Lost things, it's such a great story very moving and so absorbing, could not put down it had me hooked completely, and I usually read psychological thrillers. I have found Lisa Jewell a great read (more recent ones are better) for this type, but for a more light hearted semi romance try Katie Fforde. Hope you can find something that is enjoyable and enjoy the holiday.

ThatWhiteElephant · 04/06/2018 17:46

I loved The Girl WIth All The Gifts and have most of the other choices on my kindle waiting to be read.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 04/06/2018 22:54

Definitely Linwood Barclay. His books are never a chore and pure escapism.

dementedma · 04/06/2018 23:10

All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr is beautiful

Ginburee · 05/06/2018 17:55

Birdbox was a really good read, as was the girl with all the gifts.
Another vote for Elenor Oliphant., and I too have the waiting room in my pile to read.

bluetrampolines · 05/06/2018 18:04
